Snowball
And yet for years people on here were saying that Shane Long only got his goals AS A SUB
because he was coming on fresh against tired players... and this season all Church's goals are
as a sub. As a starter he has drawn a blank.

Kind've disagrees with the above doesn't it?

And yet in many pubs in many places many people did not say this. Kind OF unsubstantiated, I would'VE said.

I don't think many people would ever say Shane Long was only able to score off the bench. Lots of people had a problem with him coming on as well as when he started! True he played a great role as an impact player due to his pace. But your post says it can be an advantage to come of the bench. This actually agrees with my point that advantage or disadvantage, sub appearances can't really be compared with starts.

I mean Elwood 18 (0) - the (0) is totally unnecessary and confusing to people whose football isn't all statistics websites and management games. In the case of Henderson or Long in previous seasons, the sheer number of sub appearances meant it was necessary to point them out. But if someone has made a handful of sub appearances theres really no point in adding them in. They may never have touched the ball!

Libertine Howard had basically been riding the pine, if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it...well you know the rest.

I have no idea what this means, but I enjoyed reading it.

LOL...yeah, I know. Sometimes I think I should post with English subtitles. :P :D

All I was saying was with as little as he was playing lately he probably won't be that missed when it comes to on-field contributions...nobody will notice a difference. I agree with the people who say he just isn't a good fit with us. But the last I saw his leaving was far from a done deal.

What is it with the club? Looking to loan out players who then immediately get called into our starting 11?!

I think, regardless of how he played, today showed that we need Howard. Who would we have played if we didn't have him?

It was blatantly a ploy to put Barnsley off. Well done McD!

No, it's all part of a new technique of motivation by threat :

"Play a blinder on Saturday or I'm sending you to Southampton!"

We've recently had rumours of Howard and Bryn going on loan. Surely the past few weeks where we've needed every resources shows that we should keep this squad together for the rest of the season.

It's likely that both could leave in the summer, but getting rid of them now with 9 games left would be a ridiculous decision when they have both had some level of involvement recently.

Fully agreed. And I'd really like to see Bryn kept on and moved into another role within the club as his playing days come to an end.

But what does he want? Sitting on the sidelines until his career ends or to play football?

One of the reasons that we attract and keep players it that they know that the club will treat them fairly and do the best for them, including taking their wishes into account - rather than treat them like faceless commodities to be used wholly at the club's behest.

Just posted this on the back from the barnsley game thread, but probably more relevant here.

At least someone loves Mr Howard, but their opinion seems very different from the scape-goating he gets from us lot.

He might well not be here next year, and might not have set the world alight, but get behind everyone for the next 9+ games can't we?

Howard has decided to stay and help the team win promotion.

Brian is happy with that apparently according to the EP.

The thing with Howard is he does give the ball away, but its because he's always looking to play a forward pass, and does have attacking intent

He can play the Gylfi role, I remember Gylfi being out injured for a few games last year, and Howard played in that space. Doncaster away he was immense, ran the game. He is more than capable, just needs a few games

Good news that Howard is staying - we need all the help we can get to reach the play offs.

I think he is harshly rated by some on here. He has had very good games for us - but unfortunately he has had some terrible ones as well. However, he did well Saturday by all accounts.

Brian is happy with that apparently according to the EP.

READING midfielder Brian Howard has said he will remain with the Championship team for the rest of the season, despite interest from Saints.

Nigel Adkins had spoken to Royals manager Brian McDermott about the possibility of bringing the player to St Mary's on loan for the rest of the campaign.

But former Saints trainee Howard, who started in Reading's 1-0 win at Barnsley on Saturday, has now said he intends to stay at the Madejski Stadium, after talks with McDermott about his future.

“Bri doesn’t want me to go and we’ve spoken,” said Howard, who now wants to help seventh-placed Reading reach the Championship play-offs.

“I want to play more, but when I have played I think I’ve performed well lately. We’re strong finishers and I think there will be a few teams looking over their shoulders at us.

“There’s been a lot of speculation about me going elsewhere, but as far as I’m concerned I’m a Reading player.

“I’m joint top of the assists here, we’ve got nine games to go and I’m available. Hopefully I can play my part in getting this team into the play-offs.”
