Replacement for Long if he goes

by Binfield Royal » 02 Jun 2011 15:55

If Shane goes...

most managers, BMD included have a history of "going with what they know"

There is such a striker, plucked from obscurity yet proven at this level who Brian knows well and thinks very highly of.

ladies and gentlemen, boys are girls, I give you....

Dave Kitson :D

Actually, that's not a bad shout (wages apart). He would be a very decent foil for Church or Hunt.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm...... on reflection, yes please.

Kits is at least still fit and 'only' 31 versus completed leg-shot Glen who's perhaps surprisingly 'only' 36 this year (he's still the most skillful player ever to wear the True Hoops, but couldn't hack it at Aldershot)

What has Kitson done in the last 3 years?

36 (00) 08 Goals Portsmouth
06 (00) 03 Goals Middlesboro
09 (01) 02 Goals Reading
23 (17) 05 Goals Stoke

74 (18) = 77 x 90 minutes for 18 goals, worse than 1 in 4, and he's aging, will be 32 next season. He got 9 yellows this season.

Not saying he's a bad player or wasn't once a great player, but he's hardly a replacement for Shane 2011.

Watching a bit of the Ireland game last night reminded me how much I liked Andy Keogh. He's not had a great time the last couple of seasons but I wouldn't complain too much if he was the man to replace Long.

He has a touch of the Kitsons about the way he can hold up the ball and bring others in.

Cox has still looked very good though.....

Andy Keogh is not the player to replace those lost 25 goals. He hasn't scored that many in total in the last 4 and half seasons in the league, despite making 96 starts and 47 subs appearances.

He is more of a support striker.......

Agreed WR, he's by no means prolific and doesn't play in the same way (hence my comparison to Kitson) but Keogh may be the kind of player to get better results out of Church and Hunt.

Totally agree you couldn't expect him to get 15-20 goals though.

Marlon would fit the way McD seems to have done transfer business as Reading manager bringing in old heads for cheap, mixing them with the youth the club have provided and taking some punts on pontential players. Obviously marlon fits the old heads for cheap. Also he's used the loan market well, so to continue this he i was him i'd wait for Qpr to splash some cash and try and loan a decent striker off them and repeat what we've done with legs. Helguson, Mackie, Hulse, Agyemang and Clarke are all on their books at the moment and I can see them getting a few more in and therefore needing to make some room. Also if mills goes i'd bring in one size on loan as well.

another good option ......

Bristol City boss Keith Millen says he is under no pressure to sell Nicky Maynard, even though the striker only has a year left on his contract.

The Robins paid Crewe Alexandra £2.25m for the 24-year-old in July 2008, but Millen insists he has no intention of putting him on the transfer list.

"I don't want to go down that route. The club doesn't and I'm sure Nicky doesn't," he told BBC Radio Bristol

...doesnt sound overly convincing ...thought he would know as his manager...

As if we would be in with a chance of signing Nicky Maynard.
