Football is never just about hard facts. That's a snowball-esque blinkered view.

You have written some tripe but this takes the biscuit.

brendywendy not hen specifically talking about the goal scoring record of a striker as being average.

his scoring frequency at this level, and the average goal scorers freuncy are both cold hard facts, regardless

I wasn't talking about his scoring record, I was talking about him.

so youre saying you can assess a strikers worth, while ignoring his goal scoring record?
ok then - i think weve seen, time and again, with doyle, and long, that hunts worth is so much more than just his good goal scoring record too.

Ian Royal Noel Hunt has an excellent scoring record. However he is not particularly outstanding apart from that.

Are you both happy with that Brenders, winch?

I have a slight issue with 'excellent', for me, if Hunt played every single game next year and only scored 15 I wouldn't call that excellent.

But yes, that's probably a fair statement.

and i have a slight issue withhim not being outstanding apart from that. i think he contributes alot for a striker.
remember most of the season he played as an attacking midfielder, occasionally a winger, the other strikers feed off him, and he has a great leap for a short bloke.

but yes, i guess thats probably fair

It depends what else he's doing - if he scores 10 but helps create 30+ for other striker(s) then he's been excellent. But you can't measure a striker's worth to the team in just goal or assists - there will be plenty of occasions when a striker's movement takes defenders away and so creates the space for others to score - but that isn't a "goal scored" or an "assist", and so in the minds of those who a judge player's worth from their performance on a spreadsheet it will never have actually happened.

Svlad Cjelli Betting the farm - they either have an owner prepared to underwrite those sort of losses, or they don't believe that tomorrow will ever come.

And when tomorrow does come they get their debts wiped away, lose a few players and it's BAU. Until things change and punishments are made more servere (.

This is Jay talking, right?

Why do people think that a posted stat is the ONLY measure?

Just because a striker has a decent number of goals and assists and completed tackles and completed passes doesn't mean (if posted) that the poster denies other factors.

It's just that with these we have official stats. Facts, if you like.

Incidentally there's a lot of hypocrisy floating around.

When Shane wasn't scoring the battle-cry was "A striker has to score goals. END!"

Or did you all decide to forget that bit?

Thing is, a striker is ultimately judged on his goal scoring record. That said, I remember back in 83/84 Senior was banging them in for fun yet Deano only managed something like 1 in 25 games. Oddly enough, no-one ever got on Deano's back because we could all see the value of his contribution to the team. When he did manage a second goal in the stripes, the place went mental

PARTNERSHIPS for me.

Warboys and ???? at Cardiff, way back. (Known as Smash & Grab). Once saw Warboys score 4 goals in the first 16 minutes v Carlisle.

Keegan & Toshack

Doyle & Hunt (31 with Hunt coming off after 60-65 mins replaced by Long)

Long & Hunt (35 in 2/3 of a season)

And if a partnership exceeds 30 goals, yer talking...

No Brendy, you can assess a striker's worth including their goal scoring record, and even if that is good still consider them average.

Warboys began his career at Doncaster Rovers, making his debut in April 1967 at the age of 17, before moving to Sheffield Wednesday in 1968. Following Wednesday's relegation in 1970, he joined Cardiff City for a fee of £42,000, as a replacement for John Toshack who had joined Liverpool. On his home debut for the club, Warboys scored twice against the team he had just left, Sheffield Wednesday and went on to finish the season having scored 13 goals in 17 league games, including scoring four times in one match during a 4–0 win over Carlisle United, as the club missed out on promotion by one place.

I should know, mate, I was there (supporting Carlisle!!)

Jimmy Scoular was managing and at corners they used to
have this thing with about six players running opposite
diagonals across the box for corners. Every time it threw
the Carlisle defence.

After 16 mins 4-0. It was all Carlisle after that. Final score 4-0

Memory is interesting. I thought Cardiff bought Warboys from Bristol
but he was partner to Brian Clark at Cardiff (and scored that 4-goaler v Carlisle)
and then moved to Bristol where he partnered Bannister and won promotion
to the old second division.

That one result (the GD alone, then GA) got Cardiff third at Carlisle's expense

Of course you can. You can deny the facts, deny the fact that his goals per minute matches Long and Doyle
and his goals-with-assist is BETTER than Long and Doyle. You can deny the fact that both Doyle and Long
scored more often with him as a partner, but hey.

I know Warboys played for Cardiff but his smash and grab partnership with Bannister was with Bristol Rovers which I think you have now recognised.

Sorry snowball you are so wrong Warboys and Bannister were the original "Smash & Grab" and played for Bristol Rovers. My Brother was in their youth team at the time with Gary and Kevin Mabbett. Their coach was a bloke called Gordon Bennett ! as for him..... enough said

I said ages ago that I'd got stuff mixed up. Warboys DID get his 4 goals in 16 mins against Carlisle (I was there)
(supporting Carlisle) but he was later transferred to Bristol Rovers where he formed the partnership with Bannister
