Rumour - Ben Hamer leaving

by LoyalRoyalFan » 18 Mar 2011 22:52

A number of clubs are keeping close check on Reading goalkeeper Ben Hamer, skysports.com understands.

The 23-year-old is currently on loan at Exeter City, where he is impressing as number one for Paul Tisdale's side.

Tamer is a product of Reading's youth system, but he has been limited to only a handful of cup appearances and is yet to play a league match for the Championship side.

However, he has enjoyed numerous loan spells away from the club which has seen him chalk up over 130 league starts.

He has enjoyed time with Crawley, Brentford(four different spells) and now Exeter.

His displays at Exeter have not gone unnoticed and now a clutch of clubs are keeping a close eye on Hamer's progress as he is regarded as one of the best keepers in League One this season.

Championship clubs Millwall, Hull City and Swansea City are all keeping tabs on Hamer.

Reading would be loath to lose Hamer, but with Adam Federici firmly entrenched as their number one they could be willing to do business

Would we be loath to lose him? Only fair to let him take his chances elsewhere - he's obviously number 3 in the pecking order.

Fair play to Sal Bibbo in producing some very good goalkeepers.

The fact McCarthy and Anderson are ahead of Hamer is why we'll be happy to listen to offers for him.

Are they really ahead of him tho, he is on long term loan, I believe so cannot be recalled. We do however have 4 decent keeprs so something could well give in the summer.

Also if we do not go up and Feds leaves then that would leave us with a space, and Hamer knows the club well, the other way is to have two keepers and rely on a loan if one gets injured, would be disappointed to lose 2 in the summer myself.

I'd image we're planning on losing one of the 3 young keepers as well as Federici. We have Locke coming through behind the other 3 and this is the first time the club have had more than 2 credible keepers on the books. I can't see RFC being worried about only having 2 keepers plus the next up and coming youngster as it's exactly where we've been for years.

'greed, he's the oldest of the three I think and looks possibly 4th choice, including Federici. He needs to leave to further his career, whereas I think Andersen and McCarthy can afford to give it at least one more year and see what happens with Feders.

Even if Feders goes I'm not sure the best decision for him would be to stay, although it would be handy for us to have him on the bench and give McCarthy / Andersen go out on loan to keep developing.

But you never know what might happen, eg a,massive unexpected bid for federici, mccarthy gets injured... who knows.

Assuming no one offers us a fortune for any keepers is just keep leaning them out. Compet surely helps them get better. What fantastic squad depth the academy has given us- look at Sheffield utds stale squad plummeting downwards.

4th choice keeper what with Feds, McCarthy and Andersen. No point in him staying really, especially if this young bloke Santangelo (?) is half as good as people say

And Henly too.

I can see Feds and Hamer Moving on if Feds can't oust McCarthy from his no.1 Spot. This is going to be a real test of Mcd's Management skills tbh and give us a better idea of his style. If Coppell was here we all know that McCarthy would be dropped in favour for experience, but will McD be the same?

4 in the last 15 minutes or so

The first being a penalty conceded by Golbourne (remember him?) and scored my Mooney (remember him?)

One of them being Jamie Cureton.

Was this match one with the largest number of ex-Royals ever? Or would that involve Wolves or Brentford?

Been told Hamer will leave Reading, but only if another club matches his RFC wage. He's already turned down Exeter.

I don't understand why footballers refuse to lower wage demands when offered first team football. Surely the whole reason they became footballers was to play for their career, and when offered the opportunity, I'm sure I would take a pay cut if I was playing week in, week out.

If they can see their career floundering then wages is all they've got.
