Why would he take a sideways step? He'll go upwards if he goes.

Yes, he's our Director of Football, do they not mention him much on the radio?

I believe that he is one of the best things ever to happen to RFC. Some of the deals he's done - both buying low and selling high have been masterminded by NHa. Without him the team on the pitch would be a whole, whole, lot weaker.

We really do have some utter spacktards on here, don't we? Christ.

Hammond has been a huge success in the DoF role here and it would hurt us if we lost him!

I am sure that McDermott would say exactly the same as Coppell.

Deserves much more praise than he gets in my opinion.

With Baines on this.. Hammond and the management team at RFC is immense given resources.

Its not sexy this behind the scenes stuff but as important as what goes on on the pitch...perhaps more so

But not a "Director of Football" in the traditional sense, which is why some people who don't understand what he does instinctively criticise him.

whats the traditional sense?

isnt that how its done on the continent?

i do believe though that it only works because he wasnt a successful player, or manager, and therefore doesnt create pressure or resentment with the manager.
he just does all the stuff that stops the manager managing.

The traditional sense is of someone who controls the overall tactics and strategy, and selects players for the manager - or at least someone who the manager/coaches reports to. DoF >>>>>>>> Manager

Nicky Hammond acts for the manager, doing all the negotiations and getting him the players he wants at the right price, and acts as the link between the "football business" and SJM.

So here it's not DoF >>>>>>>> Manager but more like DoF ======= Manager.

It's the "football" word that confuses people - he'd probably be better understood if he was called something "like director of football commerce".

Don't get me wrong, though - he still does get involved in the football side - advising BMc from a seat up high. This was invaluable to BMc when he started as manager, and he was still criticised by many for being on the phone when we played Cardiff.
