Yes- with our first game only tomorrow I'm really worried.

Ideal I'm just asking, since we only have two.

of course it isn't and the management will be more than aware of that. there's plenty of time to bring in a replacement or two, and gunnarsson is good cover as well. it's far to early to start worrying.

Christ, we only sold Mills on Thursday, I think there's a fairly good chance we'll sign a defender between now and 31 August.

Besides, we did alright with Sonko and Ivar in 2005.

Two centre backs could be enough if we had no injuries or suspensions which is unlikely.
Its still early days though so I'm not too concerned yet.

In three of our past four seasons in the Championship, we've started the season with one or two fit centre backs (Sonko and Ingimarsson, Pearce, Mills and Pearce). For two years running, we knew we wouldn't have Ívar fit for a good while. Under Rodgers, we used Cisse there until we got Mills in, then we added O'Dea and Ingimarsson regained fitness. Last season, we were lucky that Pearce and Mills held up (the full backs didn't), and we managed to add Zurab and Harte as well as welcoming Ingimarsson back from injury again.

We'll probably manage to recruit a new centre back before the season starts. If not, Harte is perfectly capable of covering in the event of an injury or suspension until we do get someone in, as is Gunnarsson.

i am worried at the financial implications of us not getting any mills money.that said, im sure mcd will get to the start of the season with enough to see us well into jan.and if following this club over the last ten years has tought me its that they know what theyre doing, and footballs a funny old game.

Of course Brian will get some of the mills money, do you honestly think that when asked the question, he was going to say yes we have 2-3 mill to put back in? Every player we look at will have their price inflated by their clubs... he is just playing the game

WHAT!!!! We only have 2 centre-halves!!! OMG - does the club know this???

Thank the Lord that we have some smart cookies on this board to point out these failings to the club!

ONLY TWO?

If they were Freeman and Hicks....then that would still leave one as surplus

No..........................which is why I'm delighted that we have at least 3 plus Gunnarsson.....................................who played there against those footballing minnows at Man City where we tanked 1-0.

Reading fan in starting nonsense thread shocker!!!

Ideal, have you considered emailing the club about this issue?

Well, it's been some time since we released Ingimarsson, and the club must have been aware that the sale of Mills was a strong possibility, so it seems a bit strange that we haven't already got a couple of replacements in..

Since Thursday? You don't bring in, until you know the player to be replaced is off. This Leicester thing looked pretty fast paced to me. That was supposed to be the reason for the very large fee.

And we still have nearly a month until the season starts.

Sat 6 15:00 H Millwall
Tue 9 19:45 A Charlton
Sat 13 15:00 A Leicester City
Tue 16 19:45 A Portsmouth
Sat 20 15:00 H Barnsley
Sat 27 15:00 A Hull City

With 15 points up for grabs in that first month, I'm hoping we are able to get a couple of new defenders within the next few weeks, so they can really gel with the squad before we kick start our campaign. I would be looking to take at least 10 of the 15 points of available, and would feel confident with a a solid defence.

With Mills gone, the likelihood of suspensions is greatly reduced.

In recent seasons we've needed four, and sometimes that wasn't enough and we had to rope Bryn in. Centre backs are prone to suspension and injury, it seems.

Brian is certain to get someone else in, but I'd rest easier if he got two in, because Morrison's not my idea of a first-choice defender. He could be brilliant, but it's unlikely he could step up from third-tier and reserve football just like that.

im nlot saying this is the plan- id hope/expect us to replace mills, but surely the idea that we go into the season with pearce, morrison, harte, and bryn as our CBs, and then only replace a long term injury with loans bewteen now and jan isnt actually that bad
