TBM
roadrunner This doesn't really need a new thread so I'll stick it here:

Italian club build underground stadium

An Italian football club is trying to build an incredible new stadium that will be almost completely underground.

The incredible new ground is set to be built by architects Marazzi Architetti for Siena, who are currently on-course for promotion to Serie A this season.

The 21,000-seater venue will be sunk into the ground so as not to disturb the stunning scenery of Tuscany.

Marazzi explains that the idea behind the award-winning plan is to make the stadium "just like a Greek amphitheatre", with one side of the stadium to be a grassy slope rather than traditional plastic seating, with those on the other side of the stadium enjoying a wonderful view of the ancient hilltop city itself.

The various restaurants and souvenir shops of the modern stadium will be hidden inside what the architects refer to as an "inhabited roof", which sits alongside one side of the stadium. It is the only part of the stadium visible above ground level, but it will still blend in with the surroundings since the concrete structure is to be clad in local stone to make sure that it does not look out of place.

That grassy slope of a stand, surely freak heavy rainfall could be a problem. :|

It probably wouldn't be proper grass - more like the Madejski Dome grass....plus from the plans it looks like it will still be seating and not just a flat slope.

Cool idea, only problem i see is people just rocking up and watching the game for free by standing up the top

The football is so exciting that the guy to the right of the middle picture is chatting on his mobile!!

The largest is the three-tiered West Stand, which will hold 11,833 spectators. The East Stand (the Family stand) will hold 5,404, the North Stand 2,688, and the South Stand, which will contain away supporters, 2,575. The stadium has been designed by London-based Architects, KSS.

It is worth noting that the stadium attendance has the capacity to be increased at a later date, with room for a further tier being installed above the East Stand (Family stand), which will increase the stadium attendance to a possible 30,000 seats. This building work would require no changes to the stadium frame and layout, as the space where the tier would be added will be free above the East Stand.

The deal confirming the naming of the stadium was announced on 22 June 2010.

The stadium will incorporate: a banqueting and conference facility; a nursery school/crèche; 720 square metres of teaching space for the University of Brighton; 1,200 square metres of office space. As well as football matches, the stadium is also designed for other sports such as rugby and hockey, and music concerts, conferences and exhibitions.

The stadium's drinking outlets will offer real ales from two local breweries, Harveys and Dark Star, both organisations having supported the club's appeal for a new stadium at Falmer, along with special guest beers from breweries local to the away teams

I'm not a drinker of real ales, but I have to say that is an excellent offering and also a superb idea to have the guest ales.

I don't think it'd work quite like that TBMers.

According to those pics you can

I was in this stadium about six weeks ago (Erzgebirge Aue) and the forest you can see to the left of the picture was pretty well populated with spectators. csb.

one pretty awsome stand that wouldn't look out of place in any league in the world, but three very small stands to compensate. it also looks like it's been built inside a warehouse. looking forward to going there this season.

Planning permission being applied for at the end of the year for an extra 8,000 seats.

I disagree, Brighton's look a lot like a meccano stadium.

better than the identikit bowl you guys got. plus it seems they listen to their fans as opposed to be running by a pretend pole doing everything on the cheap..

I think their main stand is better, and the roof looks good, but the other three sides remind me of Northampton.

Now aren't you acting like a dick.

Identikit, really, what identical ground was built before the Madejski Stadium?

I think I'll put you on the ignore now.

The McAlpine Stadium, Huddersfield, on which a good deal of the Madejski was modelled, and which had the same architect.

Pleased for Brighton after the ridiculous amount of time it took to get the thing done. Groundsharing with Gillingham and over 10 years at that cackhole Withdean, about time they had a decent ground.

Their fans are still delusional pr!cks though.
