paultheroyal Great move for McCarthy and great news for Reading FC.

Our number 1 keeper remains number 1 and looks like staying, our up and coming and raw talent can gain experience at a top scottish premier side and comeback a better player. Win win.

Nonsense!! He'll go on loan where his stock will increase, probably earning himself an SPL title, and he'll return a player we'll struggle to keep because he'll want top fligh football. The chairman will be the winner, not the Reading FC playing staff.

So there's interest in McCarthy but not Federici. That's... err... interesting.

Personally don't see what everyone's worried about - I hardly think having a good loan spell at Celtic will have Prem clubs clambering over him. Though I do think it'd be better for his development if he went to a League One club.

Plus, IF he goes to Celtic, he will gain valuable European experience which would make him even more of an asset. But would he be first choice or sat on his arse in the dugout?

Young English goalie performing well for a club like Celtic and you don't think top Premiership clubs will be jizzing themselves to sign him? Christ. Even as a number two they'll be all over him!

Forgot Fraser Forster has been linked with "top Premiership clubs". The SPL just isn't at the same level and everyone knows that. Even Pardew

Great, so he gets to be tested against 1 Championship level strike force, 2 League one level strike forces and 6 League Two strike forces.

All the Prem clubs are going to be desperate for him after that.

Although not for the Celtic, I remember Craig Gordon doing quite well out having a good season in the SPL...

i really hope this doesn't happen. he's good enough to be our number one and should be. he's the best keeper we have and if we loan him out i fear you wont ever see him play for reading again.

12 months ago and even in january we were hearing about all these premership clubs wanting him, yet not even a championship club seems interested. hell, why not even celtic? we should be looking for a reasonable fee like £1.5m - £2m for federici and put the boy mccarthy between the sticks.

As Ian Royal has already said, he had more than one season in the SPL and he was also a Scotland regular by 2005. Slightly different scenario to a young keeper going to Celtic on loan.

Lets not get carried away with Celtic signing him on loan - we are all aware that the quality of football in the SPL is nowhere near as good as it is south of the border - as I stated in another string - Celtic & Rangers are top half championship clubs at best - the rest are also rans (and before the hate mail starts from the Jocks on here - I originate from Ayrshire, been down here 7 years) - so McCarthy will basically be playing football at Championship standard which will further prepare him for returning to this level - and he won't be playing for any of our opposition!!

Yep. but that last season was the one that got him noticed enough to have Man u & Arsenal interested.

Remind me of the last signing from the Scotland who went on to do well in the Premier League. I know there must have been some but I'm really struggling to think of any. Could we count Craig Gordon? McFadden?

I hardly think this rumoured move is as doom and gloom as you seem to think, Jay (& others!)

Those two clubs which didn't sign him? I rather fancy that his performances over more than one season were taken into account when Sunderland signed him.

Charlie Adam - season in the Championship to aclimatise him to decent football first.
Darren Fletcher - never played in the SPL
David Goodwillie - never played in the PL

That's one and a half decent examples out of 4.
