ZacNaloen We always open with a low offer, it's called haggling.

Alan Partridge I think also though while Reading plead poverty i'm pretty sure other clubs will know a bit better and believe Reading will have cash on the hip following recent player sales, whether it's true or not.
To sign this guy I'm thinking it probably would take a Mills esque fee, £2million-ish.

No it is not. Past precedent suggests we make an offer of what we think is fair value and if it (or something very close) is not accepted we walk away.
If we have offered say 500K and Millwall want 3M do you for one minute think the gap will be bridged?
The tone of the Millwall report suggests to me that they felt the offer was derisory. Unless they are in financial straights (and I have heard nothing to suggest they are) why would they sell for less than the player is worth to them?

Why would we pay 3M for him? That's ridiculous money for a championship defender.

andrew1957 If we offered less than 3M we had no chance of the offer being accepted. Why would Millwall sell us their Captain who is under contract until 2013 for any less?
I suspect we offered a bag of magic beans instead and the Chairman finds it really hard to see why the offer was rejected.
The way RFC is being run is turning into a farce!

Ahh... decide on what we offered without any evidence, make up your own valuation and then express indignation that we didn't do it right. The HNA? way.
Well, we've got 9 days to get this sorted our and up our bid. Hopefully this isn't one where we're being totally unrealistic and can actually do some business, because he seems like he'd be an excellent buy. Thought their defence was very good against us.

And in the past have missed out on some players because of making derisory offers.
This is England old boy not the back streets of Marrakesh.

Go on then, give us a few examples where we have missed out through making derisory offers. Real examples not hna rumours.

andrew1957 Matt Mills 5.5M for a Championship defender would suggest otherwise.
