I know it's easier to slag him off (and Wax J always will for some reason) but Gerrard has been a consistently good performer for England, wherever he's been asked to play and whoever alongside.

He's sacrificed himself (and therefore the perception of a lot of his performances) by playing out of position many times for England, either out on either flank or by being the more defensive of his partnership with Lampard. That's mean that he's not been as dynamic and adventerous for England as he has been for Liverpool at his peak, but he's still maintained a good level of performance throughout his career.

Should he be back in the squad right now? To an extent no, because he's not played enough football. However, unless you want to pick a different 11 (or 23) every other game because X, Y and Z have had a knock or a couple of below par games in the preceeding month or two, then you need to stick with some players. Gerrard is still capable of being one of the better midfielders in the league, and has shown that ability in a number of his appearances since coming back from injury. Give him another month or so to prove his fitness and get back to match speed and he'll still be one of our best players (especially with Rooney not being available).

His apparent calmness in and around the squad/media would be a real positive as Captain so he'd still be my leading contender.

SImply LOL at the notion that Gerrard is shit. The amount of time that he has rescued Liverpool over the past few seasons is obscene. For one man to carry a side to near the top of the Premiership time and time again shows that he is a good player.

good at running round with his sleeves rolled up and shooting

his passing is woeful and that's the basics of football

His passing isn't shit at all, he does sometimes lose the ball making quick short passes to up the tempo of the game, but his passing is better than most.

So Torres admitting that he got the fastest 50 league goals for Liverpool mainly due to Gerrard's passes doesnt count then? Ok then.

it's a small and eliteclub the Gerrard h8rs - but a brilliant one

probably gives the ball away in his own half more than anyone I've seen with the possible exception of Gylfi Sigurdsson. still, he shouts a lot so must be good.

Hart. It doesn't matter. John Terry is the epitome of the failures of English football. We don't need a warrior, we need a footballer who isn't a total bellend.

It should probably be Parker. Biggest media darling of the last 10 years, the press will find it much harder to slag England off if he's captain.

...BOOM!

Actually, does that mean that he may or may not hate John Terry, but it will be decided at a later date. Meanwhile, Waxjers can continue to do his job but under much more scrutiny and with much less responsibility?

These chaps who are idolised so hysterically by their own, have built a bubble outside of which they can’t perform.

As soon as they pull on a shirt for a team whose supporters are likely to critique, they crumble.

Realistically, Gerrard has rarely played well for England - just the odd game here and there. Lampard had a spell of good games circa 2004, but after that was consistently one of England’s worst players.

The form shown for country rarely escapes the shadow of the form shown for club. Like Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard and Terry can pretty much fck off and our side would really be none-the-worse.

Extended-Phenotype Neither Gerrard or Lampard have been playing football this season, so why on earth would either of them make captain? It's not as if either of them has been any good for England even when they weren't crippled fat relics.

If Lampard hasn't been playing this season, why does he have 9 goals? 8)

What about Milner? Pretty sure I've seen him wearing the armband for City at some point over the last season, I can't really remember the last few England games but he generally starts doesn't he?

Ferdinand (Rio that is) has ruled himself out of the running, apparently saying he doesn't want it after the way he was treated the last time round.

I'm not sure he'll make the squad anyway (unless it's as Terry's replacement) but it's a bit damning for him to come out and effectively slag off the manager in such a way.

Thinking about it. It's got to be Ashley Cole.

Would personally like it to be Ashley Cole, most consistent performer over the last 5 years for England, I don't really understand why most people dislike him.
