Thomas L'Heureux Speroni, Stockdale, Myhill, Camp, Schmeichel, James, to name just half-a-dozen better...

Excellent tonight, commanded his box well and made an excellent save in the second half.

Alan Partridge
Royal Rother Adie Williams, who probably knows a thing or 2 about goalkeepers, believes Federici is the best goalkeeper in this country outside the Premier League.

Yes Adie being a well respected goalkeeper himself.

Agree with BF, not the best keeper at the club and absolutely nowhere near the best in the league.

That would be the Adie Williams who was one of our emergency 'keepers and played in goal at least once, if not more right?

Probably more qualified to judge than most outfield players, or indeed, you. I don't agree, but sneering at Adie's ability to judge just makes you look a plank.

he did yes, and is the only reading player to play in every position at the club.

With every number from 1 - 14 back in the days before squad numbers iirc.

Hard to beat Myhill as far as I'm concerned but Feds is definitely up there.

As for mistakes, all keepers make mistakes. In fact bar the odd save that's all they can do that will get noticed and stick in memory.

Plus I would definitely respect Adie's opinion. Nt only is he pro footballer but a centre back arguably knows more about what makes or doesn't make a good keeper than anyone else, probably even keepers too, because he has to play in front of one and form a decent bond with one. The keeper covers his arse, and he covers the keeper's. The CBs and keeper make a very tight and important unit. If Adie says he's good then I find it hard to argue... Even though I still do and think he's just "up there" and prefer Myhill :)

I might ask Adrian Serioux or Mark Phillips next time.

Federici is in great form, I saw the save he made v Cov and it was a worldie and I thought he was very good on Friday night. I still think McCarthy long term will be the better bet but there is absolutely no way he should be in the RFC team in front of Federici at the moment. Not done too much wrong this season by all accounts.

Might as well throw in my tuppence worth:

He looks in great shape and great form at the moment - totally untroubled by playing at Championship level at the moment, definite improvement on a couple of years back when I thought he looked fatter, didn't command his area and had trouble getting down into the corners.

The stop from Austin (?) on Friday was a good illustration of a keeper coming out and dominating a forward like Schmeichel used to. By the time he shot there was precious little to aim at. Save from Nimely against Cov was stunning, of course.

Unflappable and undroppable at this moment in time.

Last season it was close between Feds and McCarthy but Feds edged it.

McCarthy will have improved but Feds is twice as good as 18 months ago

and right now, easily the best keeper we have

I disagree. Feds hasn't really improved as such, he's just become more reliable and also confident.

Agree with this. Even when he was making mistakes I always thought he would pull off a save every 2 games that other keepers wouldn't have made so justified his place. He has cut out the mistakes for now, his decision making has been good and everything seems to be sticking to his gloves. Him, Fielding and Myhill are the best three keepers in my opinion.

Hmm, confidence and reliability - key attributes of a 'keeper and he has improved on them, yes?

Surely if he's now more confident and more reliable then he has improved!?

I wouldn't say Feds has improved, he's just got better.

For me the best I've seen so far have been Steele (for Barnsley not Boro) and Davis for Soton

I would definitely have Feds in the top 4 but it's a bit harsh comparing him against others as we only get to see them a couple of times a season first hand

All the attributes were already there. He just lacked concentration and a bit of a brain. He seems to have lost weight and sharpened himself up. That will largely be down to having someone as good as McCarthy pushing him so hard!

heard last night from a reliable source that federici was angling for a move away in january. then the tsi thing took over and the new boys came in, either proving a timely distraction or helped change his mind, as it did with kebe.

it's not the first time he's shown eagerness to get away. the last time (certainly that we know of) was live on sky sports with his come and get me plea.

hopefully he's more focused now on where the club is going, and less keen to get away, though in todays game with players showing very little loyalty i wont hold my breath.

Won't find me disagreeing with any of that. I'd have preferred McCarthy to start the season, or come in after half a dozen games. But Federici has earnt his shirt and proven he's worthy of it. I still like McCarthy more and think he's our future, but he's going to have to wait until at very least August, barring injury.

I think he could step up to the Premiership now and if we go up, I would be more than happy to have him in goal if he keeps up his current form.
