FiNeRaIn Pompey attendance 5,900..loyal fans rofl

complete myth

I have a sneaky feeling Fratton Park was undergoing some sort of re-development (don't laugh) at the time hence the smaller that usual crowd...I may be wrong of course!

The Fratton End was under redevelopment at the time, but I remember it being a crowd of around 9.5k, in fact I'd put money on it. I think that's a Hobnob typo there which has never been corrected. The Reading section of the Milton End had about 1.5k - 2k in it, it was chocka. The rest of the ground was about 2/3's full as well.

Anyone got a 97/98 programme to verify :?:

Bucks Dave Newbies!!

Crystal Palace 10 March 1962.We won 4-3 and finished with 10 men since injured players were not substituted.Selhurst Park in those days had a grass mound inside the stadium that people could sit on and peanut sellers sold bags of unshelled peanuts. Although there was no clear segregation of away fans, I was not aware of many other Reading fans being there.

Was that the day that Bernie Goodall broke his leg?

Bucks Dave Depressingly, I'm way ahead for the prize. Will there be an awards ceremony?

Sorry Dave but I think I may have just pipped you but I'll check the date at home later.
I think mine was about 1960 away at Swindon and IIRC we won 4-0.
Nobody went to away games much in those days-the club didn't run many coaches and unless there was a train special (Man City away in the cup for example in 1965?) it would take a day to get to anywhere north of Birmingham.

Agree, it's got to be more than that.

Don't have a programme but according to David Downs' book it was 9593.

LOL at the price being asked by the second seller.

It was October 17th 1959.
One small advantage of being old is having seen a lot of games.

Brizzle City 1-2 Reading - April 95

Goals from Lovell and Nogan all but secure our place in the play-offs. Remember little of the game as I was eight at the time but seem to remember we played quite well and City's goal was quite late.... the game might have even sent them down.

A Reading player definitely broke his leg, just couldn't remember the name.

Boxing Day 1951
Aldershot 0 Reading 2 (Henley, Lewis) - believe it or not a crowd of 12,000 or so.
The previous day we had beaten the Shots 5-1 with each of our 5 forwards (Simpson, Edelston, Blackman, Henley & Bainbridge) scoring a goal.
Can anyone go back to an earlier game than this?

Northampton Town 0 Reading 2 - 3rd November 2001.

Stood behind the goal. Remember chanting at their goalkeeper Keith Welch. "You're a welch and you know you are!"

wasn't that the game where KD made his debut as Mad Dog's replacement? Also seem to remember Watson and Salako may have made debuts.... might be wrong on that 1 mind.

Funny how some things stick in your mind.

I remember one of the best pieces of midfield play from anyone I've seen in a Reading shirt from of all people Neil Smith in this game. He made an absolute crunching tackle in his own half and then made a 40 yard slide rule pass between two defenders for Martin Butler to run on to.

Yes, I remember that game at Northampton, with Martin Butler scoring in the last minute. Wasn't that the game when at long last Pardew preferred Shorey to Robinson at left-back?

First post so go easy...

Not sure if this is correct, but I think my first away win was at Gigg Lane about 1983 when we won at Bury for the first time in 70+ years...

Horrix I think got 2 and i believe Senior got the other...

It was a great feeling leaving the ground afterwards that i definately recall..

Thank you for the welcome Mr Habbin.... :D

Easy though .. It was a great game 3-2 at a ground we had not won at for 70+ years... and a first away win...

I remember going to Blackpool on the first game of that season which was also my away game and losing 1-0... Someone bought a pie at half time and it tasted so bad he took a bite and gave it back to the guy in the booth as a present from Reading.. Have you had a thread on Pies??

Also managed the Friday night 1-0 win at the Shay that season - Sanchez?

Welcome, Cape Town. Yes it was a 3-2 win in 1983, our first win at Gigg Lane since March 1930.

Hi Cape Town - greetings from one newbie to another.

Yes, it was Sanchez who scored at the Shay on 13th April 1984 before a crowd which just about crept into 4 figures. That season was our last in the dreaded Division 4.
