Regardless of anyone's personal animosity towards Chelsea, they did a superb job on Weds night, and got an excellent result.

When one team is so utterly outclassed by opponents, there are 2 ways of playing them; we saw one way when Leeds came to the Mad Stad a couple of weeks ago, and Chelsea showed the other way - put 10 or even 11 men constantly behind the ball, time waste, defend in depth and for your lives, feign injuries to waste more time, and hope to catch your opponent on the break. Wednesday was a fantastic example of the art of the lesser team putting one over the better team.

Terrible to watch as a neutral, but, as was once said many years ago, if you want entertainment, go to a circus.

(And yeah, it wouldn't surprise me to see Reading play like that a couple of times next season!)

So will Chelsea get torn apart tonight or do you reckon they'll hold on, and maybe even nick a goal on the counter or from a set play

Personally i can see Barca winning this by 3, maybe 4 goals

Can see it being a much closer affair than that.

Couldn't bare Chelsea Vs Real Madrid in the final, the media's Mourinho love in would be in overdrive

additional - heard someone comment on the radio yesterday that Abramovich has essentially funded Newcastle's attempt to take 4th place from them, which made me lol slightly

Abramovic gives Chelsea 50m - Chelsea spend 50m on Torres - Liverpool spend 35m of that on Carroll - Newcastle make a number of astute signings using the 35m

He hasn't been so hot since Jan. Cisse has come in for big money and carried them to 4th.

TBM Thing is, Chelsea needed to take a 2 goal lead in to the 2nd leg and then just defend..........Barca WILL score at home, the pitch is huge and they will break Chelsea down eventually....when that happens Chelsea will need to revert to attacking and thats when Barca will run riot

The pitch at the Nou Camp is only 2 yards longer than Stamford Bridge, I'd hardly call that a significant difference. Yes, the way they play and the stadium around it make it seem bigger but width wise they're both 74 yards from what I've seen.

It'll be an interesting game though, and a tough one for Chelsea of course, but I think they've got a decent chance.

Barca is 115 x 74
Chelsea is 112 v 73

That doesn't sound much but its that little bit bigger to give Barca the edge to get in behind.

What Chelsea need to do is allow Barca to have the ball out wide and not go rushing in to close down.....If the ball is put in to the box, via a cross then Chelsea are more than capable of defending it - its when they get pulled out wide that Barca will hurt them. So basically just let Barca have the width and keep things narrow.

Yes, but there are costs incurred other than just transfer fees.

Cabaye, Santon, Cisse, Ben Arfa all cost money.

Ba's been decent, but you don't get to 4th after 35 games without having a good balance throughout the team.

Think I read slightly different measurements then. Still, in the grand scheme of things, considering the difference in pitch sizes allowed that's still pretty insignificant. It's one of those cliche's that I don't believe ever really has any founding in truth.

The illusion of space rather than the size is, IMO, a more telling factor, but neither anywhere near as telling as their use of the ball!

I agree on the approach though. Keep it compact and tight, no spaces in between the defenders, sit deep and hit them on the break. They will swarm all over Chelsea but as Souness is always quick to point out, if you can get past that first line of pressing they leave themselves very exposed to the counter attack.

Ashley also stated that no signings would be made unless players left, the Carroll money was the only reason some of those players were signed.....while at the same time seemingly weakening Liverpool & Chelsea with the players brought in too

Yep, for all the fawning over Rodgers this season the manager of the year should be Pardew by a massive margin. I had them down as relegation favourites after Barton, Nolan and Enrique left leaving them looking weaker before the season started.

I reckon Chelsea will get through. Nick an early goal and line up on the 6 yard box for the rest of the match.
