cmonurz There's a comment on the thread about the Palace friendly about some fans getting a bit too big for their boots already, and now on UR&G there are separate threads where some fans have decided that Michael Owen and Joe Cole wouldn't improve this side.
They won't be Reading players next season because they are so far out of league it's almost funny. On the tiny, tiny chance that they were to join Reading, they would be the biggest signings in our history.
It doesn't simply follow that because a player was once world-class
and is still very, very good, that he would AUTOMATICALLY improve
our TEAM.
If we play 4-4-2, for example, where would Joe Cole play?
Could we cope with just two midfielders if one gets in a lot less tackles?
Would signing Joe Cole mean we'd have to switch to 5 across the midfield?
etc
Owen would, IMO, be a mistake. Of course he MIGHT still get 10+ Prem goals, but how
likely is it he would fit our hard-working team-ethic, how would the other strikers
feel being pushed out by "a washed-up once-star" (if they saw him like that)
We know building a side is not simply a case of getting better players
