From The Mirror:

Brendan Rodgers is set to break Swansea hearts again by making Gylfi Sigurdsson his first Liverpool signing.

When the Ulsterman quit last Thursday to take up the dream offer of a three-year contract at Anfield, he assured Swans’ chairman Huw Jenkins that he had no plans to asset-strip his former team.

But the 12-month agreement which prevents Kop boss Rodgers from signing Swansea players does not cover Sigurdsson, the Icelandic international who spent the final four months of the season on-loan from German club Hoffenheim.

And Rodgers made it clear that he is ready to pounce – even though Swansea believed they had a £6.8million agreement in place to sign the 22-year-old permanently.

He said: “When I had a chat with Huw Jenkins the other day, after I told him I was going to Liverpool, I gave him assurances that I wouldn’t be going back for any players. My word still stands on that. But Gylfi came to Swansea because I was the manager there.

“I actually pushed Swansea towards making an agreement with Gylfi – and they eventually did that in terms of the fee and then the salary. But ultimately it’s now down to Gylfi.

“I have told Huw that if I speak to the kid, I will make sure he definitely goes down to Swansea and speaks to the new manager, whoever that is.

“But if Gylfi is not comfortable with that and he comes back on to the market then I have to be interested.”

Rodgers has promised that the men already at Anfield will be given the opportunity to prove themselves – including Joe Cole.

He added: “I’ll take time to assess all the players – including Joe Cole.

“Joe is a multi-talented player and a good guy as well.

“I know him from my time at Chelsea.

“It hasn’t worked for him at Liverpool, but he has gone over to Lille and done reasonably well.”

LOL @ Rodgers just having to mention Chelsea!!

There's still hope that in not signing for Swansea, he'll come to Reading - IF we offer a good enough deal. I'd be pleased for him if he goes to Liverpool, but he might yet rue that day.

Ian Royal Gylfi made 17 appearances out of the 23 games under Rodgers and started 14 of them. Of all the criticisms you can throw Rodgers way (and I'm far from a fan), making out he didn't break Gylfi into the team is not one of them. He did.

How many of those was he played in a 4 man midfield?

The guy was clueless how to utilise the talent he had.

I thought he only played him a couple of times then dropped him?

See Snowballs list, he played a couple of times then subbed, repeat, dropped to the bench, then subbed pretty well every game after.

There's some pretty serious re-writing of history going on here too. It seems to me that a few on here seem to think that McDermott taking over saw a sudden switch in role for Sigurdsson and an up turn in his fortunes.

The facts are that McDermott continued to play 4-4-2 quite a lot, with Sigurdsson out wide and two upfront, for quite some time. Like Rodgers he seemed to feel that the players around him, or perhaps Sigurdsson's inexperience/physical fragility meant the team wasn't always best places to have Sigurdsson as the heart of a 4-5-1 formation.

I reckon if (A big if) Sigurdsson signed we would go to a 4-5-1 with Roberts up front and Sig just behind him! But he was good on the wing because of his crossing skills. If we did play him on the wing it would mean dropping Karacan and putting McAnuff in the CM position. The team would be too attacking

Not from me, just posted the stats.

I seem to remember Rodgers saying he needed to not over-play Gylfi as he was so young

I also think he was injured under McD

But if we discount the injury for a moment, 53% of minutes (Rodgers) v 62% of minutes (McD) is "increasing use
but hardly a dramatic change. Of course if Gylfi was only out of McD's side because of injury then it's clear that
he did use him or intend to use him a great deal more

Just checking the official lineups but Rodgers selected 433 or 442 diamond

and McD switched instantly to 442 for nine games, then to 4231 for the Doncaster game, his tenth in charge

then

442
442
4231
442
4231
442 again

etc

He played a number of formations during his time, possibly one of his mistakes to be fair, and I don't think it was just restricted to the two above, but that's splitting hairs a bit.

I wasn't saying your stats were re-writing history by the way. There was a short spell where Sigurdsson was injured under McDermott (possibly because he wasn't being eased in and protected as much as he was under Rodgers?). The notion that McDermott suddenly moved Sigurdsson into a new position that Rodgers hadn't tried and got so much more out of him just isn't what happened.

Agree with this. I can't believe people are getting shitty about Rodgers saying he broke Sig into our team when that is utterly accurate.

Sadly if he doesn't sign for Swansea he will sign for Liverpool. There is no hope of him coming to Reading. If he signs for us I'll get his name tattoo'd on my cock.

Yes it's funny how memory plays tricks.

Had I not checked, I'd've convinced myself we went 451 to exploit Gylfi's skills
when in fact we almost always played two strikers.

I also seem to remember Rodgers saying he was a talent but had
to be looked after

TMD slated me for saying this, and that he could push Gerrard in an attacking midfield role. GS would be a very good signing for Liverpool, especially with Gerrard picking up knocks ever so often.
