Well, thankfully Germany don't look likely to do a "Russia".

Get in, Podolski finally contributes... I don't think a great deal of him, but his record is fairly impressive.

Edit: Q: If group GD is so irrelevant, why do ITV and BBC bother showing it?

Bums.

Why are commentators so scared of saying that someone dived when they are showing a replay of it??

Portugal and Netherlands have looked pretty ordinary tonight.

I still think that it's only really Germany and Spain that are out of England's league.

Have noticed this before.

'There was contact. I think there was. You might say he went looking for it, but there was contact, just.'

No, you bell-end, he threw himself at the defender, it was a dive.

SLAMMED
Ian Royal
SLAMMED So head to head goes before goal difference. What a load of shit that is.

Yeah, I can't believe that hasn't been mentioned somewhere else on the last 4 or 5 pages.

I didn't fancy reading back that far. Sorry.

But the BBC website says GD counts first (after points, obviously), then goals scored with H2H only applying as a last resort:

Euro 2012 - the group stage permutations explained
BBC Sport explains the qualification permutations as Euro 2012 enters the final set of group stage games.

The Rules
If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied, in the order given; to determine the rankings:

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied, in the order given; to determine the rankings:

• (a) higher number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question

• (b) superior goal difference in the matches among the teams in question

• (c) higher number of goals scored in the matches among the teams in question

Sorry, I'm being thick but I really don't understand what's going on here. Perhaps UEFA have made a mistake...

Why?

It says:

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied, in the order given; to determine the rankings:

• (a) higher number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question

• (b) superior goal difference in the matches among the teams in question

So, as Russia and Greece had the same number of points, but Russia had a better goal difference (and goals scored) why wasn't this applied, making H2H unnecessary. Nowhere can I find where it says H2H comes into effect before goal difference.

The Dutch really haven't turned up, have they?

Before the Denmark game, the Beeb said they'd interviewed some Dutch fans who said "we're not as good as you think we are". Seems they were right!

That means:
1) Points
2) H2H Points
3) H2H GD
4) H2H GS

Group GD and GS is utterly irrelevant. Which makes me wonder why the Beeb and ITV bother with it on their tables.

^This.

If Denmark score they go through, courtesy of that win over Germany, having lost to Portugal. But why do Portugal go through at the expense of the Germans, having lost to them? And Denmark would have an inferior goal difference.

What is the (potential) determining factor that puts Denmark through?

Was hoping the Dutch would rescue some pride and Denmark would somehow manage to slip through at the expense of the Purtugese.

If it was Germany, Denmark and Portugal on 6 points it would come down to points excluding games involving the Dutch. All still on 3. So it goes to GD in excluding games involving the Dutch. etc etc.

It's really not complicated. You don't need a degree to understand. A "D" in GCSE Maths ought to be enough.
