Scott urges Reading FC to spend wisely

A predictably cliché ridden interview with Keith Scott.

Reading FC have been urged to spend intelligently this summer and not throw money around for the sake of it.

Former striker Keith Scott, who was signed for £250,000 from Wycombe Wanderers in March 1999, believes his old club will not go too far wrong if they stick to their principles following Anton Zingarevich’s £25million takeover.

The 45-year-old played 44 times for Reading and currently manages newly-formed Windsor FC in the Combined Counties Premier League.

However, he maintains an on-going interest with Royals and often teams up with the Reading FC Former Players’ Association side.

“I spent two years at Reading and it is a fantastic club,” the striker recalled.

“I’m delighted that they are back in the Premier League too.

“Brian McDermott got them going last season and the team disposed of everyone on their way to winning the Championship.

“You need to buy wisely, which Brian has. It’s not about spending all the cash in that first year because if you do slip back down you won’t string up the club.

“I’m sure the theory will remain to sticking to a set budget. I’m sure they will have learned lessons from last time too.

“Reading aren’t a club that will go out there and just throw money at everything – they will do it properly and I don’t see any reason why they can’t stay up.

“The players will be hungry and if you give them an opportunity and they take it then you can do well. Reading are a hardworking side too.

“Look at Swansea and Norwich last season as well, they were like that, but I’m sure if you asked someone to name their squads they would struggle to do it.”

As part of the goalscorers union, Scott did highlight Reading’s current firepower as a slight concern in their bid for survival.

Last season only Adam Le Fondre hit double figures (12), with Noel Hunt (eight), Simon Church (seven) and Jason Roberts (six) the closest competition.

“It will be difficult to stay up, because in fairness to them, they haven’t got that goalscorer yet who can score 20 or 30 goals.

“But, they do play a brand of football whereby they keep things tight at the back and don’t concede a lot of goals.

“I can see them gracing the Premier League and being a great addition. Potentially, if you look at the Premier League, there are about eight or nine clubs who can get relegated.

“Reading will be in that little league and it’s about finishing near the top of that to stay up.”

Experience could also play a big part in Reading’s quest for survival.

Only Roberts, Mikele Leigertwood, Adam Federici, Ian Harte and Brynjar Gunnarsson have experienced Premier League football.

“The signing of Jason Roberts was a masterstroke,” added Scott.

“I think what Brian has to do now is find a few more players like him, players who have been in the Premier League for many years and know what it is about.

“Brian’s signings will be key this summer. I know him and he’s a sensible man who won’t pay over the odds and bring anyone in who isn’t right for the club.

“Players have to want to play for the manager too and Brian has that.

“As a player you have to have that belief in your manager and the messages he gives you to play the way he wants you to.

“Clearly the Reading squad respect and believe in the manager.

“I’m sure Brian will give them a disciplined framework to go out and perform, which they will relish.”

Love the irony of this thread title.

Legend has it that Tommy Burns bid twice the amount Wycombe were willing to accept for Keith Scott!!

My God, what a completely pointless article although you have to feel a bit sorry for JF - it must be hard coming up with copy when nothing exactly (well nothing that can be published) is happening.
May I suggest that this is part of an occasional series by JF with the next installment perhaps being "Shaka Hislop (substitute name of any Reading player from past decade) tells Reading to spend wisely and not to underestimate the difference between the championship and premiership".

Whilst I personally think we do need to sign a striker or two, I don't get why people, such as Keith Scott, always go on about needing a 20 goal striker. Three players scored 20 or more Premier League goals last season, from three different teams. That leaves 14 teams that survived in the Premier League without a 20 or 30 goal striker. Pretty sure historically there has been a similar pattern too.

To be fair, I'm struggling to think of a better goal scored by a Reading player at the Mad Stad. Just bizarre to think it was scored by Keith Scott!

Agreed, everything about that goal was astounding, because it was Keith Scott. The turn, dropping the shoulder, rinsing David WetheraLOLOL. Brilliant.

As for this thread, are we really now such billy big timers that an article that is positive about the club, albeit slightly pointlessly, gets such derision?

No but the ref was miles away, it looked bad on first impression and we've all seen people sent off for much much less.
