leicsRoyal MmmMonsterMunch The beauty of the way RFC is run is that it's always about the team rather than the individuals. With that in mind, you will always have someone hungry wanting a chance to prove what they can do - there will always be bargains to be had if they fit the Reading mould. It's a good way to be & hasn't done us wrong so far. We don't have to spend zillions.
Ultimately yes the net spend will go up year on year but we don't need to just endlessly oxf*rd money.
You do realise that we have only spent two previous years in the history of RFC in the top flight?
Yes, all three of our PL years are in the last six/seven. And we've got here from having been League 1 only about 12 years ago. I think it's fairly safe to say that the club knows what's doing. It fuked up in 2007/08 and we got relegated by the narrowest of margins, we're hardly in the same position as then.
This season was always going to potentially be a long hard slog against relegation. We have decided that the the amount we'd need to spend on players to improve our squad, is not proportionate to the potential difference they'd make. We have a solid squad, we've done well in the games we've had, and we've made some excellent signings already.
Staying up with the big money increase would be a huge advantage, but we've already shown once that we are quite capable of getting relegated and competing for promotion again, even on a shoestring budget. Staying up is not the be-all and end-all. Most of us will still be here next season PL or Champ. We'll still enjoy games and hate games.
On the we should spend more and be "more ambitious" front, there is 1 season out of the last 7 of evidence in support. On the carefully does it side there are 5 out of the last 7.
This transfer fever has mostly come out of absolutely nowhere. We should not be panic buying simply because Saints sign someone good. Or we made hard work of Posh.
Brian's not perfect, but he's damn good at identifying holes in the team and plugging them. And he's damn good at getting a mediocre team playing brilliantly. He'll get seriously found out eventually, and it may be this season. But I for one have no intention of ruining my enjoyment of what could be a short topflight holiday whatever we do, worrying about whether we're good enough so early on.
