That doesn't necessarily mean hoofing the ball aimlessly though and I do wonder if Guthrie's previous public utterances about being told to be more direct might actually be an indicator that he's missing the point entirely.

It could equally apply to things like training hard in every session every day and supporting the other players in the squad regardless of personal gratification.

FWIW I think he's a good player and if he can harness his ability within our ethos then we'll be a better side for it. He just needs to wise up a bit. I think he he probably had the notion that he was going to come into a club like ours and be the star of the team (his pre-season England talk might be an indication of this) without actually thinking it through.

In a playing sense the way he talks you'd think he'd come from playing his whole life in a Barcelona pure passing style when in fact his 2 previous clubs were Newcastle, managed by the likes of Pardew,Shearer,Hughton and Joe Kinnear! and um... Gary Megson's Bolton. We're not talking Rinus oxf*rd' Michels here so I can't believe what McD is asking for is completely alien to him.

But in a football sense our style isn't that far away from Pardew and Allardyce is it? Pretty direct, playing into the channels or off of a target man is pretty much a Championship style blueprint.. The difference is individually they have the better playing resources as the mere fact that this whole thread is about a bloke who couldn't get into Newcastle's team would suggest.

So if we can't match them with personnel then we have to try and compensate in other ways. McD seems to be putting his faith in the "whole group togetherness" thing as evidenced by his post match interviews. Whether that will be enough is to keep us up is debateable but I just think Guthrie needs to focus on that as opposed to thinking it's purely a matter of playing style, if he wants to make an impact here. There's still time for him to do so, but with pretty much every statement he makes it suggests he still doesn't get it.

I agree, and while this can definitely get you by in the championship, i'd question whether it'll make that much of a difference (or at least he'll struggle to maintain it) in the spotlight of the premier league, with the media unrest (which we've already started to see), player earnings disparity, agents jostling for a transfer etc...

Are you judging that on what you've seen of him at Reading only? We've played him in a more advanced role but previously he's been much more your typical midfielder (a bit more like how McDermott used Tabb and Howard behind Sigurdsson post Rodgers).

The attitude of our youngsters is worth highlighting here. Frankly Guthrie needs to get his head sorted sharpish, or he will go the same way as other "names" we have had in the past.

I'm relieved to get these clichés, to be fair. Much preferable than him mounting some kind of rebellion. Means we have him available, and we will need him.

As for cancelling his contract, I don't think there's a chance in hell the club would write off a £2m asset just like that.

Hardly a 2M asset if he cannot get a game for us - I doubt we could sell him. And if we have to pay him for 3 seasons to sit in the reserves that would cost us a great deal, so I stand by what I said. If he is unhappy and wanted to go and someone was prepared to take him, I could see us releasing him from the contract.

However, I hope he knuckles down, gets back in the side and becomes an important player for us, rather than becoming another Matejovsky or Fae – players that just never lived up to the hype.
