Why do people seem to assume that anyone who prefers one goalkeeper thinks the other is a useless pile of shit?

FTR, I think Federici is a very good goalkeeper, one of the best at Reading for many years.

But I also think that McCarthy is not just a very good goalkeeper - I think he's well on the way to becoming a truly great goalkeeper. I honestly think he has a brighter future in the game, and will go higher in it, than any other player Reading have developed in all the time I've been watching them.

And I despair that the career of a potentially great goalkeeper is being held back for the sake of a goalkeeper who's merely very good.

Indeed yes- fans of each seem increasingly entrenched ... but really i was thinking of the future and when McCarty is fit.

Bearing in mind the performances of Alex McCarthy over the past few matches, is he really still out "number 2" keeper? And who will Federici react if he gets dropped when McCarthy is fit - effectively making him the "number 2" keeper?

I know what I want to see happen, but I fear the fallout from it might further fragment the dressing room and that means we might lose one of them in January - I only hope it's the right one.

Maguire That's odd, because one of the (many) criticisms of Federici you lot come up with is that he doesn't organise the defence well enough. The implication being that you can't judge a keeper's performance just on the physical saves he makes, but that he's partially responsible for opponents being allowed to shoot in the first place. By this logic the fact that Norwich didn't get a sniff was - partially - due to Federici's organisation of said defence.

And I was talking about Gorkss at QPR. But if you like, since he got his own thread with the special needs club slagging him off he's notched a goal one week and a clean sheet the next.

Please slag off Jason Roberts this week - he needs a goal.

If you're going to argue with me, perhaps you'd be so kind as to keep it to something I've said, rather than lump me in with comments I haven't made.

Apologies on not noticing you were referring to Gorkss against QPR where he was better, if not up to last season's standard.

TheSiege We are lucky to have both McCarthy and Federici. Feds had a dodgy start to the season and, being Aussie, will come back stronger. Oh look, he's given us the first clean sheet of the season! I have more confidence in our goalkeepers than I do in some of the other positions!

I may be wrong, but I don't remember Feds making one save, so he hardly gave us our first clean sheet of the season.

There's no assumption there - read the litany of "we're doomed" threads about Federici coming back in to the side. How quickly you all forget.

Apparently they had three shots on target, but agreed they weren't particularly big saves. Nonetheless, I'm sure his Aussie banter played no small part in keeping the ball away from goal.

The stats I saw said they had 3 shots total, but only 1 was on target. Remember it well, a header straight at Feds after about 83/84 minutes.

I just went by the BBC stats (10 total, 3 on target...), but agreed, I can't really remember 3 on target either

According to Opta, Reading have now faced 306 shots at goal - more than any other side in the top five European leagues this season.

No wonder Feds is struggling...............
