Optimist Marek Matejovsky has the best footballing-brain of anyone who has ever played for Reading. There were so many times he would read the game so quickly and pick out a killer pass that wasn't expected by anyone(fans and players alike), unfortunately his team mates just couldn't read what he was doing fast enough and many a chance would go a-begging, prompting people who simply weren't paying enough attention to be fooled into thinking Marek was to blame.

Not even the best footballing brain of anyone who has played for Reading in the last 5 years.

Ahh. The Caskey defence.

You ain't a player with a great footballing brain if you spend your time picking passes your team mates can't read or reach. I'm not saying he was shit, his technique was good. But he had no impact because he wasn't suited to English football and he didn't have the attributes to be successful here.

Having a great footballing brain is an individual thing, if your team mates are not as alert as you you're not to blame. I still think if we'd played him behind the striker as we did with Gylfi, he could have been an amazing RFC player and possibly still in the team.

Not athletic enough or prolific enough a goalscorer to play in the hole.

If you can't see the passes to pick for your team mates runs you aren't smart enough. Passing to no one is not a useful skill in football.

FFS Brian Howard had more impact for us than Matejovsky. And I don't just mean when he fell over. If Matejovsky had what it took someone else in England would have taken him on and got the goods out of him. Even then that doesn't mean he'd have been suited to playing for us.

Play him anywhere and he would have been knocked off the ball too easily.

In his best spell for the club, with Howard under Rodgers, he still set up more goals for the opposition than he did for us.

His passing was shit: he even muffed short balls back to the taker of a throw on.

He just didn't have the speed of thought or sense of urgency to cope with English football.

His tackling was a red card waiting to happen - sadly he never got one.

He was the worst player ever to wear a Reading shirt.

+1 with knobs on - genuinely the worst player I've ever seen - possibly the only football professional to be a worse player than I was

As usual, it's a tight competition between Paul Bodin, Simon Shepard and half of Burns' players for me. Marek probably wouldn't even get in my bottom 50 (last 17 years), even though I don't think he was that good for us.

Marek seems so bad as we expected so much from him. And that he let us down on some rather crucial occasions. So I would definitely put him in my 'shite' bin.

I quite like the direcfion that this thread is going in.

Hmmm. Players who came here, but didn't live up to the billing.....

I give you one Steve Moran. A bit of a ledge in southern Hampshire. Had been involved in the England squad, and was at the time our record signing.
He looked about as much of a threat in the box as my mother in law.

How about Ray Hiron? An "experienced pro", whose legs were shot. If he ran the length of the pitch, he needed a defibrillator.

McGhee got Steve Archibald in on loan, to have a look. Have I ever seen a less disinterested player? I can't think of one.

Bobby Mihaylov. Enough said.

Fair point but at least he looked a bit like a footballer which Malcolm didn't.

Great photo. Sandwiched between two of my favourites at that time he almost looks the part! I do remember seeing him score a goal away at Fulham from wide on the left but I think it was meant to be a cross and his miskick fooled the defence. Wish we still had that strip!

Did he not score a goal after coming off the bench in the 2008 winner takes all home game against Birmingham? I remember thinking he'd come on and saved our season before Keith Fahey spoilt everything.

Great phot! A real eye-opener for our junior supporters that! A right bunch of rogues! Just shows how the PR machine these days even governs the Team Photo Shoot. Most of them look hardly capable of standing up!

Jimmy Wallbanks is surely far left, middle row? Tony, Barrie's brother must be in there too somewhere?

And look at Deathy. Can you imagine a keeper that size in even park football today?! Yet he was one of the greatest. Even an England under-21 wasn't he?

Brilliant kit, I agree, but unlikely to happen unless QPR get relegated (and we don't). Premier League dictate the kits. They don't like similarities, thus why Southampton have ditched their traditional kit this year.

Talking of PR I like the way Baylis made sure they got the ad for his shop in the background

That he did, and a couple of minutes later he just missed a ranged effort. Changed the game for us, and nearly got us promoted.
