I read they paid it all up with a lump sum payment of £3 million allowing Cole to take £50k down from £80k.

We were never going to have a chance of signing him with West Ham involved, and I'm not sure how we would even work it financially, but I still don't get why any Reading fan would look down their nose at a player of his quality (just look at his two assists today - we could do with those crosses). Some people on here treated Guthrie like some kind of Jesus while he was out of the team yet don't rate a 50+ cap England international with way more ability. Crazy.

Massively. They'd have to bounce straight back, similarly to last season, to have a chance of not imploding down the divisions. So seeing as they'd be so fooked, they're spending big to stave it off. Which only means it'll be worse if something does go wrong.

We haven't entered into that spiral so we have alternatives and can survive going down and not bouncing back.
