It exists as some kind of metaphysically homeless no man’s land adrift from better known English areas. What does Stoke have to offer culturally or historically? Archetypal post-industrial/manufacturing decline City with persisting scars. Pottery and Coal Mining were the biggest employers so not Thatcher loving territory. One of the most Northerly points of the Midlands (anything beyond is North really).
The Staffordshire Moorlands and nearby Peak District provide the natural beauty spots. Struggling economy which would require masses of investment to fully modernise. Comparatively poor to the rest of the UK. Residents are community minded and usually quite friendly. Nearest City to Alton Towers theme park.
Culture is a bit thin, Robbie Williams is from there (Burslem). Pubs and Darts! - World Champ Phil Taylor is from there. It was also one of the UK's original House Music/Rave club Cities - Legendary nightclub 'Shelleys' in Longton was one of the first after the Hacienda in Manchester (the famous DJ Sasha was the resident there). It was demolished around the time a dual carriageway (that also runs past the Stadium) was built. Later on, another club 'Entropy' was established at another venue (The Leisurebowl) which was also one of the best in the country.

Thanks for summary. Just remembered they played a part in the Northern Soul scene and I have a compilation of tracks known to have been played at the Golden Torch club. Perhaps suitable listening for my trip up there next month.

If you are prepared to put up with a taxi ride to the Britannia and real ale is your tipple of choice, then your pre and/or post-match visits have to include the Coachmaker's Arms, as this will be your last chance, being as how it is being torn down after Easter. The single best real ale pub in the five-town sprawl and closing for ever, despite a 5 year long campaign to save it from disappearing under an approach road to the new Bus station (an approach road, mind, not another building or anything, as if it's not a shameful enough end anyway). A classic Victorian corridor pub, with a serving hatch in the corridor and four rooms off, always with 6/7 great beers on.

Other choices: The White Star, The Unicorn.
All three of these are in Hanley and within 10 minutes of each other for that perfect matchday pub crawl.
