Thanks to TTE for posting my little 2011 blog piece on Bryn. http://www.thetilehurstend.com/2011/10/ ... unnarsson/

It's not the biggest piece on the internet, it's not the cleverest thing on the internet but it's probably the most sincere thing ever written by anyone ever.

3 veesinarow Ah, that goal at Ewood...when the free-kick was smashed into the wall, the Rovers fans began to go "weh-hey" , but hadn't reached the end of the taunt before the ball was nestling in the back of their net, smashed in by the Brynnator.

Bryn was a limited journeyman of a footballer, a footballer who in 8 years played barely 150 games for the club.

A limited journeyman who's career highlight tape is twice as long as players who played twice as many games. A player who picked moments where it really mattered to do something special; the brace against Sheffield United, the header at Old Trafford, the belter at Ewood, the nutmeg and cross at Anfield, the winner at Oakwell when we played with 10 men for an hour.

And that's it really, the one constant in the most successful 8 years in the club's history, always there, never complained, 100% every game, model pro and role model for younger players, a player who would step into the spotlight with a sheepish self conscious grin, almost embarrassed to steal the limelight from those "more" deserving.

Club legend? Absolutely. Like Robin Friday before him, in 20 years time, people will still be talking about that nutmeg, that header at Old Trafford, that belter at Ewood, and Bryn will still sit there with that bemused grin, wondering what the fuss was about and wonder why the hell so many otherwise sane people in a foreign country shower this humble, limited, journeyman Icelander with such unwavering adoration.

All the best Bryn, good luck and hope to see you back at the Mad Stad again.

Thank you for all the brilliant memories

Good post, but you forgot about his two goals in that 2-1 win at home to promotion rivals Sheffield United in 2005/06, and his volley that hit the bar vs Man United in the FA cup replay, at almost tied the game at 3-3 and completed an incredible comeback.

But yeah, was hoping we would already be safe from relegation and that he would get a cameo appearance towards the end of the season, but certainly doesnt look like it. Shame.

Clever footballer who never quite had the talent to make the most of his fantastic footballing brain. As honest and likeable a character as any you will find in professional football, he will be a massive loss behind the scenes and in all our hearts.

Best of luck Bryn, I have no doubt you'll make a fantastic coach. In 5 years time I hope to see you back here as manager.

I know the rest of your post goes on to be very supportive, and I am sure that you are a fan. However ......

based on those numbers it is hard to call him a limited journeyman. That represents nearly 20 games a season averaged over his Reading career. Given his low count in the last 2 or 3 seasons he had an excellent attendance record earlier. Hem will go down as a Reading legend, as you go on to say, and for good, solid reasons.

Get a flight back for Saturdays game Bryn because you deserve a standing ovation from the fans for the contribution you have made to the RFC journey as you have been a big part of part of that.

A minute applause on 26 minutes for Bryn????

I think you completely missed my point with the first line. There will always be a perception of him with some people as a limited player. Ask any Stoke, Forest or Watford, and that was certainly the impression a lot of people had of him when we signed him, a player of limited ability who had wandered around a number of clubs without much success. Too many people look at the bare statistics though. 150 games in 8 seasons, only 10 goals, too slow, too immobile blah blah blah, so I was looking to explode that myth with the rest of the post.

Could a limited journeyman really be so key and central to so many of the great moments? The whole point with Bryn is that scratch beneath the surface and you see an impact far beyond the those lazy first impressions

Probably still the best all round midfielder this club has ever had.

Sadly, whilst still in his prime, Steve Coppell brought him here as "cover" for inferiors such as James Harper and
"God's" favourites ALWAYS came first even when staring relegation in the face.

If Gunnarsson was a "limited" midfielder, we've never had a decent one in 140 years.

Thanks for all the great memories, Bryn, and all the very best of luck for the future.

Harper did a great job in a thankless role during one of our most successful ever periods. We could do with a player like him in his prime back here now.

Anyway, back to Bryn.

If we'd gone out and signed a couple of 28 year old Brynjar's at the start of this season, I don't reckon we'd be in anything like the mess that we currently are.

If his family are back in Iceland now, he must have known he was going prior to the last home game shirley? WHY didn't the club make the announcement then so we could say goodbye to him? :|
