Surpirsed to see such disgust at his sacking.

In any other profression or work place, an employee that had got it so wrong and showed they could not step up would have been sacked...and this is the Premier League where the stakes are sky high.

I think the defining factor was his record againt the fellow strugglers. 1 point from our encouters against the bottom 5 is truely untenable. If we were at least competing to stay up, then he may well have been given until the end of the season, but we are sinking like a lead weight, and apart from a purple patch where we were at times very fortunate to say the least, 22 games or so, we have been clueless and not competitive. We average 40% possession in games, simply not up to standard tactically, and we have dropped 20 points from winning positions, He did not know our best team or formation and simply had no anwser when we needed to change things. It was painful watching the short comings of a man who contributed so much, but this decsions needed to be taken, and as much as I am grateful to brian, it was the right decision.

Some may argue he wasn;t given the money, the truth is none of us actually know how much money was made available, and I am sure the powers that be would have taken that into account when they made their decisons. Anyway, good luck to Brian wherever he ends up. He would do any lower league team proud and I hope he is welcomed back to the Mad Stad in the future as a guest so the fans can say a proper goodbye to him and show their appreciattion for all he has done.

Definitely needs a final outing.

Failing that a "oxf*rd off Di Canio, McDermott was ours", if he gets the job.

If he was to be sacked it should have been after the arsenal game in the league cup. Showed himself to be naive in thinking that the players could step up and always playing 442. We were so open it was untrue. He had money to spend in the summer and chose not to, and then tried to buy overpriced, unrealistic targets in January.

Best of luck Brian, you'll be a massive asset to another club. Thank you, but we move on

Except West Brom.

And it'd be hard for Wigan to get promoted twice without a European super league, seeing as they haven't been relegated once yet. Those examples may not be the best, but you do look a bit stupid.

PS sort the fecking quoting out.

facaldaqui I would not have sacked him. But then, unlike the top brass, I am not partly to blame, so I can see why they might do this. Brian is a legend, and even taking us down would not be the end of the world. Perhaps I would have negotiated Brian's stepping down at the end of the season, if we went down, but Brian has made me love this club more than ever: I sincerely hope a lot of his values remain.

Agree with this. I can't honestly say I'm shocked or surprised (because, as Coppell once observed, the Premier League and its money encourages the morality of the harlot). But I am really saddened. There are arguments to be made for BM being the best Reading manager there has yet been, not least in terms of what he has achieved for the resources available. He had a dignity and level-headedness that is increasingly rare in the money-obsessed and short-termist top echelons of football. His handling of triumph and adversity alike has been exemplary.

I don't know what will happen next. I can't say that we will implode like Wolves (although we might), nor that we will somehow turn a corner, this season or next, and arrive at the sunlit uplands of beautiful football that some of the critics on here say BM has denied us (although how anyone can have forgotten the intense highs of last season and the cup runs is beyond me). What I do know is that a little bit of the soul of Reading FC has died today, wherever we go after this.

If we were going to be ruthless, sack him earlier. But personally I think he had earned the right to see this season out and make a pitch for being given the opportunity to launch the next campaign.

When TSI took over, and some among us were salivating about what the Russian millions might achieve, I was one who counselled watching what they did, not what they said. Until now, I've been very encouraged. Maybe today is when it starts to turn.

If thats the case , and gazzar has always been proved reliable, then Brian only has himself to blame. His downfall was his loyalty to players and inability to judge what was needed to stay up.

West_Reading Posted this on the other thread. 'Disgusting decision. The joke is that if we hadn't got promoted last year, and were 7th/8th in the Championship this year, he'd still have a job.'

True, but the same can be said for many a player who earns their team promotion but just isn't deemed good enough to make it at what is a significantly higher level. Isn't that part of our problem?

I do see your point but perhaps the club are thinking that whilst we remain in the PL with a chance of staying up (albeit a slim one) we are in a better position to recruit someone decent.

I think you'll find Wigan, Stoke and Swansea have only been promoted once. Swansea has only had two seasons in the Premier League in that time. We've had three.

I think you'll find Wigan Stoke and Swansea all spent decent money year on year and stayed in the Premiership longer than us. Swansea will enter they third season in a row in Prem something we have never done  Oh and chuck in a bit of Fulham. All these teams similar size to us but ran properly and the Premier way of staying up

If McDermott had done only as well as Adkins this season his job would never have even vaguely been under threat.
