RoyalBlue If we'd gone out and signed a couple of 28 year old Brynjar's at the start of this season, I don't reckon we'd be in anything like the mess that we currently are.

No you'd have just complained that they were useless journeymen and weren't up to PL Standard.

I really don't know why I bother responding to you when you come out with dumb comments like that. However, what you are saying is utter b*llocks. Open your eyes, start to read things properly and you might just notice that there have been times when I have said that we need players like Bryn was at 28 (and that was up to PL standard). What's more, despite your pathetic comeback, what I stated remains valid. A couple of 28 year olds like Brynjar would have made a big difference. Far more than signing hopes for the future.

Of course, signing a few other players of genuine PL standard would also have helped!

Apologies to Bryn for allowing Sandman to drag me into a different argument on a thread that was meant to be a tribute to the great Icelantic player.

melonhead
Sadly, whilst still in his prime, Steve Coppell brought him here as "cover" for inferiors such as James Harper and
"God's" favourites ALWAYS came first even when staring relegation in the face.

this thread is about praise for gunnarsson
not for spouting off on your own mentalist anti coppell and anti harps agenda

ITS NOT ALWAYS ABOUT YOU!

WTF did this post have to do with me :|

Here's a clue: "Me" posters will generally manage more than 3,000 posts in 9 years...........................and can sometimes create their own tsunami with more than 50k spread over several different usernames

So, yes, back to Gunnarsson.

Had Coppell not been convinced that the sun shone from James Harper's backside, Bryn would have started at least another 100 games.

In Melonhead World, this amounts to a vendetta against James Harper, if for no other reason than it represents a great excuse for another 10 posts.

Anyway, back to the OP.

He had the knack of not giving the ball away, and also in keeping (strangely?) with our other Icelandic players great technique. Actually I fucking love him.

Top pro, top bloke, exceptional role model for young players. Bryn moving back to Iceland will leave a far bigger hole than many could imagine. Total legend for all the right reasons. Not the greatest player, nor one of the fastest but certainly one of the most honest and consistent.

Looking forward to seeing him play this summer, since this ended up happening I'm glad it did now, so he can get his pre-season work in with the team at least. Hadn't gotten myself a shirt this year, sorely tempted to getting Gunnarsson on the back of one now.

Sad to see him leave Reading though, it's a weird feeling, being this unhappy about the him leaving Reading side of it all and yet happy he'll be playing for my team now. Him and Ívar were big parts of why I started following Reading in the first place, end of an era in that sense too for me at least. Reading need another Icelander, preferably a good one picked up from one of KR's rivals please  Though I can just as easily see him nudging one of our younger players to play for Reading (maybe over some other team) if the opportunity presented itself. You've got yourself an ambassador at IMHO the best team in Iceland, that's valuable given the club's good track record with players from here.

Ian Royal
Maguire About time.

Way past time he left the playing squad, but sad to see he's not stayed as a coach. Although perhaps we've seen demonstrated that he wasn't good enough as our behind the scenes work seems to have been rather weak this season.

Good luck Brynjar. Massive legend considering you never really held down a regular first team starting place or played that many games for us.

He was a great asset as an overage player with the youngsters.

NEWS STRAIGHT FROM THE MOUTH OF BRYN HIMSELF (at least it is to me, but then I'm a tad out of the loop)

Bryn is just on the Icelandic version of the weekend wrap-up, being his normal likeable self. The two permanent hosts are doing a good job of grilling him on football in general, but also talked at length about Reading, and in particular Brian's sacking and if we should've done things differently in transfer windows.

The big revelation to come out of all that from Bryn, he reckons DOLAN WILL STAY in charge UNTIL END OF THE SEASON, when a replacement will be found. Didn't say if this was straight from someone at the club or just his own thinking, but it sounded to me like it's at least in part based on what he's been hearing from someone at the club.

Bryn is not in favor of Brian's sacking, and said we should have stuck with him.

Bryn was also of the opinion we could well have competed at the start of the season with the players we had, but then rather in the opposite direction says we should have used the windows, and particularly the summer one, better.

I'm rather busy at the moment and won't be able to finish watching the show tonight, but I'll be sure to check it out again in repeats (what a weekend for me to be back home for a bit, to catch this) and maybe my fellow Icelanders can fill in the blanks, because there was much more said on Reading than I have time to type out.

It's good to see he made it home at last, because for the last week or so his whatsapp profile pic has been showing him sunning himself by a pool, with a beer handily placed and status of 'this retirement thing is quite nice'. Did he say where he had been?

Maybe the beer is to blame for the slightly contradictory comments about the transfer windows ;)

Ooh, that's 50 posts up in 9 years - must slow down!

I hope that's his opinion and not insider information. We need someone in permanently now who can get settled and plan for a very busy summer.

Betting Pro speculating we begin interviewing next week and want someone in before the close of the 2 week break.

I'm afraid you may have to learn the hard way that massive changes and getting rid of lots of players during one summer doesn't work. We tried to do the same thing a few years ago when we had a manager called Brendan Rodgers and years before that when we had a manager called Tommy Burns not that you'll remember either of them as Reading Manager.

When Gunnarsson was 28 he was competing with Gavin Mahon for a place in the Watford side and Aidy Boothroyd eventually let Gunnarsson go to Reading because Mahon was preferred. When he came here, yes he played his part in getting us up and keeping us up, but once Sidwell left he showed he wasn't up to playing in the Premier League. As much as I liked Brynjar, he was probably never really a PL standard player, at best he was equal to Leigertwood (who has played in the PL with three different sides).
dontbedaft So does this make Frederici our longest serving member of the first team squad?

Federici was signed in January 2005. Gunnarsson was signed that summer. So Federici was the longest serving player anyway, although Gunnarsson made his debut first.
