I do, might not necessarily be a formal contract clause though.

so what youre saying is we would allow any club to talk to any of our players if they offer money at a value we find to be adequate for the player involved?

We agree with the player what their own release value is - and all we're committing to is to allow any club that makes an offer in excess of that value to talk to the player.

I think it's a formal part of their contract, so is updated whenever they sign a new one.

As agreed with the player in advance. Which is what I said in the first place. I said I don't know if it's formally written into the contract - I haven't seen them - but I do know its what the club has gone on record as saying we do.

So the bemused look's on you brenders. :|

That won't put them off! We need to give them a quote of at least £25 million.

not really m8
you said that everyone had a clause, but you didnt know if it was formally in their contract, and i joked that basically ammounted to us selling players if the other club offered us what we thought they were worth.
plus i didnt dish out a bemused look in the first place. although i do now.
:|

id like to see a quote or source, before i could possibly agree with you about it.
you saying it happened isnt really good enough for me tbf

We have always been very good at letting players know about bids that have come in for them. And I have heard before about players knowing their value to the club, contractually or not, so Ian might be onto something there, although if it isn't contractual then values can be pretty dynamic.

JordCot Personally I don't understand this one. Obviously we know McCarthy is good because he is ours so we have paid attention to him but he can't be that well known? Butland was getting regular football before his england and olympic call ups and while McCarthy was good in his stint this season he wasn't SPECTACULAR and didn't have loads of games to show his quality. I can't see chelsea splashing big money on him, specially with the impressive looking Courtois

He made headlines with his spectacular display against Swansea. That's what people would have seen. Also good last time he covered for Feds in the champ. I totally get it. Cech won't be around forever, and they'll still need 2 excellent keepers.

You don't think that clubs with vast scouting networks wouldn't be aware of a keeper who's been involved with England age groups, including the u21s, and has played nearly 100 first team games at the age of 23?

Yes of course, but they can't be at every game, so the headlines and the hype must have an effect.

I'm not saying he hasn't been good but I think we see him with rose tinted glasses because we have followed his development. While I am sure every big club in England is aware of him I don't think he has done enough to warrant them actually buying him. Put it this way Butland is the bigger name young keeper who has a similar number of championship appearances and has played at the Olympics and it is only stoke who snapped him up for 3 Mil. Arguably Butland has shown as much if not more than McCarthy and he hasn't gone to someone like Chelsea

That effect being very very minimal at best. They'll know all about him and won't need to see him in every game to understand how good he is.

Those games he grabbed the headlines were ones where he just pulled off 2 or 3 good saves. That's the easy bit of goalkeeping and those games won't have as much impact on a clubs view of keeper as you probably assume.

If he's being courted by Chelsea we'll never be able to prize him away from Ipswich.
