Having read through this page I'm still know clearer. Are we getting the current parachute payments or are they moving them forward 12months.

Couldn't give a shit what happens as long as it benefits us!

We get the new £60m deal.

The FL are contesting it though.

It works two ways. If the Football League don't want the relegated sides, then the Premier League can refuse the promoted sides...

League One clubs are to receive £360,000 while League Two sides get £240,000, increases on last summer but not enough to soothe the anger felt by some. The proposal of blocking entry to the Championship came from an unnamed party representing a League Two club and, though not well received by the rest of the Football League, the Mirror says it is symptomatic of the depth of feeling over the issue.

FL clubs can't survive without the PL sympathy grants. If the FL try and contest this (IIRC they did similar when the PL tried to do something similar a few years back I think it was something to do with TV revenue though) then the whole thing will fold. All they can do is bend over and politely take it in the ass.

Or say goodbye to promotion and relegation. In which we have nothing to play for ever.

There is no chance of that ever happening. This has all come from one League 2 chairman..

What a year it would be for stopping promotions and relegations to and from the PL.

It would more than make up for '95 plus I think there might be riots in Cardiff.

So - are we absolutely sure that Reading get the bigger parachute payments? Because I keep hearing comments in the media which suggest otherwise.

Yes, there was a lower league revolt two years ago, lead by Tony Cleanthos of Barnet - this was when the solidarity payment system changed (the "sharing out" of unused parachute payments was scrapped, for instance) and also the introduction of EPPP.

But as always in these things, the PLsaid "If you don't like our proposals then we'll walk away and give you nothing" and the FL clubs caved in in a second vote. The PL has such financial muscle, and so many FL clubs are dependent on their payments, that no revolt will ever last for long.

It;'s one of the many things that absolutely sucks about football finance today - the FL clubs have no effective sovereignty over their own league, because the PL holds the financial strings and pulls the FL clubs to do whatever it wants.
