Alexander Litvinenko Although I'm not sure about the title and the way this thread has developed. Some of the people mentioned so far aren't "nice guys" - they're utter cunts who just happen to give a part of their massive wealth away to charity.

A "nice guy" has to be genuinely and consistently "nice" - not just loaded and aware of how much good publicity they'll get from giving money away.

Fair point.

I'd add Xavi to this list who always comes across well in interviews. I liked his reaction to Barca's defeat at Celtic last year, when rather than feel sorry for himself, used the interview to praise the atmosphere created by the crowd. I also like the fact that Matt Le Tissier is his favourite player.

Some players evidently have different characters on the pitch to off - Luis Suarez for example, it's often been written that's he's an absolute joy to work with and an total credit to himself, until he steps over the white line.

Carles Puyol - without publicity paid for cancer treatment for ex-Liverpool and Barcelona player Miki Roque - word came out (not from him) after Roque died...

Bryn?

Not sure if he does much charity work, but was always prepared to be a squad player here and not kick up a fuss about it.

Noel Hunt - wasn't he a club ambassador or similar before he left, due to all his charity/community work?

I think Noel Hunt was genuinely so grateful for the life and job he found himself live had that not only did he put everything he had into keeping it but he was always first in line whenever there was something to be done for the community.

No Fixed Abode
sandman I particularly enjoy his work rattLOLing you on the subject.

I'm not the one paying his wages like you though...

And If I hated him the way you do I would probably have a problem with that. Also having seen his charity work in Granada at least I know that if I do "pay his wages", which I severely doubt my £375 season ticket covered much of, that it's going to a good cause. 8)

Now if I was paying John Terry's wages...

Ivar too - gave lots of time to the community, far over and above what he needed to do, contractually.

As I recall Ulises de la Cruz gave up a good proportion of his weekly salary to aid various projects and his home village back in Ecuador

Doesn't Jason Roberts also do some charitable things in Bermuda

Plus Noel Hunt - and Stephen - both brilliant in and around the local community.

All the Irish lads at Reading were nice guys, I remember Coppell saying how professional Doyle was and how he just turned up to training every day gave him no trouble whatsoever. Same with Shane Long.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/6302665.stm

A South American footballer playing in the English Premiership is spending his high salary not on fast cars and big houses, but on rebuilding an entire community where he grew up.

Ulises de la Cruz, who plays at Reading, was born in the Afro-Ecuadorean village of Piquiucho.

It is a three-hour drive north of Quito, the capital, nestled high in the Andes mountains, close to the Colombian border.

Ramshackle homes are perched on the hillside at the top of the Chota Valley beside the PanAmerican highway.

It is like stepping back into a little piece of Africa. Along with the vibrant culture, there is poverty.

Jobila Jorga lives in a two-room shack with her extended family of 12. She says Ulises "is the only one who cares".

"The government has done nothing to help us, we have been ignored by the authorities.

"He has provided a fresh water supply, it prevents disease spreading. We used to get fungus on our skin because of the dirty water."

The 32-year-old defender explains: "The 2002 World Cup, when Ecuador qualified for the first time, financed the 18km of water pipes and a treatment system.

"The 2006 World Cup in Germany, when we reached the second round, was important because the success means I can finance a new sports and community centre, now under construction."

His priority for the 200 families is education. He has provided hundreds of books, a new roof and a playground.

Each day, 100 primary school children receive breakfast and lunch at school, courtesy of the Ulises De la Cruz Foundation.

Health, too, is a big concern. Cramped living conditions means disease spreads easily.

He has built a medical centre and has been sending money to pay for a doctor, a dentist and a nurse at the clinic.

IIRC, he went back to one of his first club (Quito) and basically lead them to the South American version of the Super Cup.

wiki tells me he's now an MP for his region.
