This crock of crap rumour has finally been given the funeral it deserved at the time with today's news.

Unless of course, Drenthe's also played under Felix Magath and would be keen to play under him again as well??

Considering how well Reading played against QPR, how much of a chance does he have of getting a game in the near future?

Relevant that HRK was brought on in preference as well.

If a team in the Premiership thinks that a player would be a good acquisition and we are currently not playing him - this is a Management problem. He should be destroying other Champ teams for us. I actually think that Adkins has done a good job given the problems that the Ownership situation has dropped on him but, should we get promoted, what does this say about his ability to deal with talent?

Well, Adkins is hardly alone. I don't think any manager has been able to deal with the talent that is Royston Drenthe. which is why he's only played 130 games in 8 years. I'd love to see him tear up the Championship, he has the talent, but all the talent in the world means jack shit if it isn't allied to application.

A bold signing but it hasn't worked out.

Had Fulham genuinely been interested, it would have been a desparate (and relatively cheap) gamble by a desparate side.

HRK was brought on to play up front because he is more of physical presence. Even if Drenthe was in favour you wouldn't stick him up front with 10 men

Absolutely.

With plenty of games to go, I'd be surprised if Royston doesn't feature again.

Anyone with even the slightest knowledge of the dark arts of how players agent's work will know that there was zero substance, fact or reality behind this story; Drenthe's agent would have had an "off the record" chat with a tame journo in an attempt to generate "buzz" around his client. The agent was hoping that this might have led to a premier league team enquiring about Drenthe, which would have led to Drenthe demanding and thus securing a move away from little ol' Reading and into the big bucks (for both player and agent) of the PL....

Therefore, your first sentence is negated because at no time did Fulham or any other PL team "think that the player (Drenthe) would be a good acquisition" and so, be definition, there is no management problem.

Drenthe isn't destroying Championship teams not because Adkins isn't giving him the chance to, but because an experienced manager who has had promotion from this division, has decided, by looking at him in training, that he simply isn't either good enough, fit enough or does not fit into the shape/style of the team at this time. In fact, I would say that this shows that in dealing with players Adkin's has a strong character; many weaker managers would have been tempted to play Drenthe simply because he played at Real Madrid previously.

Oh, and didn't Adkins get pretty good performances out of players like Lambert, Lallana and Shaw whilst at Southampton? Shows he seems to be able to deal with talent pretty well.......

There is a bigger underlying problem with Royston, there must be. If he were that good, we'd be building our team around him. If he were that good, he'd be the first name on the team sheet. If he were that good, he'd be starting more often than not...and so it goes on. Undoubtedly, he has the skill, but I think he's struggling to adapt to the physical nature of the division and what's required in his position. This needs him being less of a maverick and more of a team player and I don't think it's in his make-up. I'd love us to have Royston in our team, but I can't see it working.

Adkins may have trouble with him adapting to that ethic, so he plays with a team that does work hard, track back, know their position etc.

Royston SHOULD be performing so much more, but it's no wonder he's not present. Either physically, mentally, or how he fits into the squad, either one or some or a combination of all aspects has just made it not work out. Something radical needs to change, but I can't see it happening for him.

We did seem something similar with Pog. For while he looked like he thought himself a little too good for the likes of us, once we were relegated and his performances were not great. Once he cottoned on he wasn't attractive to a bigger team he knuckled down and he is one of the first names on the team sheet.

Also with Akpan, when he started to get a bit uppity with Adkins, he challenged him to show his worth and in recent weeks he has performed a whole lot better.

Nameless A) we should take it, and file alongside Andy Hughes to Norwich and Matt mills to Leicester as stunningly good bits of outgoing transfer business
Don't forget Greg Halford to Ipswich

I think Andy Hughes takes the prize though.

TBF Andy Hughes never sulked and always gave 100% (even if he was fairly limited talent wise). Definitely file under Mass Sarr and Greg Halford, but at least we didn't pay a fee for Drenthe (did we?).

Big signing on fee. Might as well have.
