paultheroyal Italy will beat Costa Rica.
Italy will beat Uruguay

We will beat Costa Rica.

We will play Colombia in Round 2.... Heard it here first

Apart from me saying it a few pages back.

I dont get the moping going on in the media right now. Radio 5 'reviewing englands failed world cup campaign'. Wtf?? If the most likely 3 results happen then we are through

A complacent Italy won't beat a fired up Uruguay next Tuesday if they're already through by that point.

This. They'll play some fringe players and prepare for the (it's a) knockout.

EDIT: In fact, i'd be surprised if they beat Costa Rica convincingly.

But in this World Cup, likely results do not always happen (Costa Rica v Uruguay for example ). Costa Rica can easily nick a point tonight.

There's a reason that teams never get through when they've lost their first two games

Have to admire the fact that you think England beating Costa Rica is a "most likely result"!

I don't see it that way I'm afraid.

MmmMonsterMunch They missed Cole badly too. Really don't get why everyone raves about Baines.

baines and johnson are both suited to the flying wing back role not defensive full backs.

but could only play that system if we had three decent CBs
which we dont

ive no doubt that cole a d terry in that side would have won one of those two games.

I dont follow Costa Rican football closely but before their game against Uruguay I dont have a huge amount to go on apart from winning 1 of 6 games on the build up to the WC and drawing with bottom of the table Jamaica and losing to Honduras. Aside from the Uruguay result I dont see any good result in their other previous 9 games.

of course that doesn't tell the whole story but certainly doesnt suggest something we should fear

I have hope we will qualify still.

Will Italy take their foot off the gas in the last game if they win today? Or will they want to keep their momentum going into the second round? Hopefully the latter.

Encouragingly we have created more than enough chances to win both the games, which shouldn't be overlooked. Hopefully they will be able to continue that into the euros in 2 years time. Not used to seeing England create so many chances.

Also +1 for Roy to remain in charge.

What a demoralising result and performance that was. After the promise shown against Italy, it just predictably descended into the dishevelled, scruffy, uncoordinated and second rate mess that accompanies England's tournament campaigns.

No composure, very little in the way of class, substandard passing, defence hacking and hoofing when it only needed to be brought down and played out. How much was that St George's Park academy £100m? What the fcuk? To produce a National team that plays like it's from some underdeveloped ex Eastern Block backwater - deficient, unorganised and awful to watch.

It's a bit too soon to be writing some of the promising younger players off just yet as they need a chance to mature to that level, as far as I could see there was only one class act from our own league playing last night and he wasn't in an England shirt.

Why are people so surprised that we can't win games on the world stage when our first choice 11 consists of players of the calibre of Henderson and Jagielka?

Rooney is horribly out of form and shouldn't be starting games. You only had to see how tentatively he put that tap-in in (and how close to the keeper) to see how low on confidence he is.

Joe Hart isn't shaping up to be anywhere near as good a keeper as he or the media hoped he would be (Fraser Forster surely couldn't be that much worse of a bet?).

Welbeck, for all his winning the ball back usually does feck all with it, and doesn't contribute goals.

Baines looked scared to get forward and cross the ball for the first 80 minutes of the game.

We're relying too much on Sterling or Sturridge to create something out of nothing.

As for Gerrard - how many other teams in this day and age rely on a player who's 'qualities' include late, two footed tackles, shots from 30+ yards out, or primarily the 50 yard, cross-field hollywood pass? Possibly only Spain in Xabi Alonso, and we all saw how well that worked for them.

I'm done.

Is 20 months not long enough to teach someone to pass it to another player from your own team and bring it under control then?

Italy can't go through tonight though

Even if they beat Costa Rica, they need at least a draw against Uruguay to go through

What he said.

Say Italy win 2-0 tonight (very possible) a 2-0 defeat to Uruguay coupled with a 2-0 win for Costa Rica over England would knock them out on goals scored.

FIFA rules use GD, Goals Scored then head to head to split teams.

A win for them tonight just means we have to wait until Tuesday for confirmation of our exit.

Just the usual, toys out out of the pram histrionics on this thread.

Rooney was easily the best in white last night. Yes, of a pretty awful bunch.

Lol at those bemoaning the tap in. If that was Suarez at the other end everyone would have been talking about his desire to get on the end of it, and how he opened up his body and used his left to avoid the keeper.
