I personally feel his body shape/size etc has nothing to do with it...Its a very similar situation to Nicholas Anelka, bags of talent but has a group of people following him around filling his head with bad information.

He could of been the very best and has and could of been at the very biggest clubs but his brain isnt in it...Maybe sheffield has a decent recording studio for our Drenths to record his new album, footballs a sideline to him at the moment which is a massive shame IMO

Ian Royal I'll admit I was taken in. He was an exciting talent and got the crowd going. But he just never delivered on it. It's like he expected to turn up and win games and didn't know what to do whe n the opposition didn't roll over and let him.

Jason Roberts said as much at the weekend, stating that he underestimated the pace and physicality of The Championship.

I honestly think the game came ridiculously easy to him on 2007 and he he's either unwilling or unable to cope with the level of effort and sacrifice required to maintain that, hence he's been loafing it for 6 years and living off a reputation built on that tournament.

melonhead
Extended-Phenotype I’m not mate, I’m suggesting that he can’t be that unfit i.e. unable to regain fitness within a short window, which therefore renders fitness rather unsatisfying as a reason for his exclusion here.

As for his basic application, I can’t confidently agree that a lack of effort is present (I don’t go to training and haven’t heard anyone clarify this), let alone what came first in the lacking effort / exclusion chronology.

Seems to be a lot of hate for a guy who’s situation we know naff all about and whose performances were no worse than half the squad (and could reasonably be argued to have seen improvement had he played more).

Just think it’s a shame for any signing to end up like this, let alone one who had such promise and undeniable skill.

He was entertaining, and his effort on the pitch was fine
Seemed unable to.maintain it for 30 mins though

Corrected that for you.

Sheffield Wednesdays take over has broken down so we could see Drenthe back here sooner than we thought

Was Roberts referring to Drenthe or himself? I assume Drenthe but wonder if Roberts was talking from personal experience and he clearly adapted.

I dunno, I doubt Roberts ever had any major fitness issues as he played regular football ranging between the 1st and 3rd tiers of English football for his entire career up until his injury at Reading.

It will be interesting to see if a club in a Europe bought a bunch of Championship players and got them playing Championship style whether they would do well in that league, assuming most of the opposition players are of the same skill as Drenthe and used to playing the way he did over there.

Fitness, Commitment, Determination and limited Skill > Low Fitness, Lack of Commitment and Determination and great Skill.

Came on instantly did a few step overs and fake shots
Then played an awful ball into the middle of the park
Then missed 1 or 2 chances especially one at the end which was poor
5/10

Our Roy-roy?! Never!

This one

Wasn't brilliant but he hasn't played for a while.

Maguire should have stayed on.

It's difficult to know how a successful spell would pan out for Royston and we'll get him back soon enough. He's not going to put in a spell of energetic bustling performances like Pogrebnyak did for us last season to wipe away the disappointment of an ineffectual first season. Wednesday might get a few flashes of genius, I suppose, but probably not enough to justify whatever fraction of his wages they are playing.

At the moment, I wouldn't say he is our worst player ever, but I might change my mind if he returns in January for a few more 30-minute cameos where he needs substitution by the end.

Most of the comments on that site mirror what has been said about Royston on here. They have him sussed within a 30 minute appearance.

Looks like he's got everything, delivers very little. Could be dangerous once he's fit - which he won't ever be.

With regards to Royston and Reading FC, The priority is to get him off the books as cheap as possible, As long as keeping him under contract is cheaper than terminating it he will remain a Reading FC player...... unless the negativity translates into a bigger financial cost.
