Victor Meldrew Kes,
At last you realise by your own hand (don't want to go there so let's say by your own post) Chelsea really is a club with no history.
.

First London club to win the European Cup. That's history right there.

Chins up old boy - At least you have two teams to choose from when one or in your case, both of them are not doing so well.

We have no history though.

Correct CheLOLsea have very little history compared to the big boys.

If it wasn't for the rich sugar daddy they would be around similar sized clubs like Aston Villa, Wolves, Forest Leeds and Blackburn.

Thats about your history sunshine.

Got an awful lot of catching up to do, to be mentioned in the same circles as Liverpool, Man Yoo and the Arsenal

But lets not forget when these clubs were formed.

Arsenal were formed 19 years before Chelsea
Liverpool were formed 13 years before Chelsea
Villa were formed 31 years before Chelsea
Wolves were formed 28 years before Chelsea
Forest were formed 40 years before Chelsea
Blackburn were formed 30 years before Chelsea

That's some head start by all those clubs.*

*Except Leeds.

Kes has got a point, most of those clubs are much older than Chelsea and the Football League had been going 20 years before Chelsea were formed so lets make it a level playing field and compare those clubs' records post war against pre Abramovich Chelsea 1946-2003. That should include all Chelsea's pre Abramovich major trophies

Chelsea - 1 League Title, 3 FA Cups, 2 League cups, 2 Cup winners cups and a European Super Cup - A respectable haul of 9 major trophies

Arsenal 7 League Titles, 6 FA Cups, 2 League Cups , 1 Cup Winners Cup, 1 Fairs Cup - 17 trophies
Liverpool 14 League Titles, 6 FA Cups, 6 League Cups, 4 European Cups, 3 EUFA Cups, 3 Super Cups - 36 trophies
Villa - 1 League Title, 1 FA Cup, , 5 League Cups, 1 European Cup, 1 European Super Cup - 9 trophies
Wolves 3 League Titles, 2 FA Cups, 2 League Cups - 7 trophies
Forest 1 League Title, 1 FA Cup, 4 League Cups, 2 European Cups, 1 Super Cup - 9 trophies
Blackburn - 1 League title, 1 League Cup. - 2 trophies
Manchester City 1 League Title, 2 FA Cups, 2 League Cups, 1 Cup Winners Cup - 6 trophies
Spurs - 2 League Titles, 6 FA Cups, 3 League Cups, 2 UEFA cups, 1 Cup Winners Cup - 14 trophies.

Personally, i wouldn't count a glorified friendly like the Super Cup as a major trophy.

So it would appear that Chelsea are some way behind the likes of Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool and about on par with Villa, Wolves and Forest.

I did specify 1946-2003 but I do accept that the War Cup trumps, for example, Aston Villa's 6 pre 1946 titles, so gee shucks, Kes wins the argument again.

I'm going to guess that when Liverpool were successful they could pay more (fee & wages) that the other clubs and thus attract better talent. Why should there always be the same order in football

I'm guessing that they (and Man Utd) were able to reach that position organically.

I guess it was just coincidence they were owned by one of the richest families in the UK?

Football revenue has been skewing further and further towards super-rich sugar daddies and Euro TV money for decades. Utd's power was built at a time when gate money and merchandising was a bigger slice of the pie - IMO.

I'd be interested to see a comparison between gate receipts as a proportion of income and wage bill across the last 30 years.

I don't see the relevance. Modern football has little or no relevance to what happened in 1871. The game has changed and the financing of it has changed beyond all recognition...but it's all relative. The big clubs then had far more income than the smaller clubs, nothings changed just the amounts are now openly obscene

Whoever had the most money invariably won (usually). Players were encouraged -bribed- to join and would get paid their official wage then add bonuses and a brown paper bag top ups to get round the rules. The days of Celtic players being born within a mile of the ground is such a long time ago it was fabled in the Bible.

I realize this thread's primary function is to wind up Kes, but if the Thai's suddenly said "we're going so spend 1billion squidlies on getting RFC to the top" would that mean RFC suddenly 'have no history'?

No but whatever we achieved with the billion squidlies would feel less legitimate.

I, for one, was gutted when we won the championship in 2012 thanks to zingarevich's money.

Like every fan of every other rich club I'd pretend like it didn't matter but deep down I'd know it did.
