If he was under contract yesterday, then can't register with any English club until Jan.

Pretty sure it is. Otherwise you would see more contracts annulled mid season to allow players to move clubs. He could still move on and play for another club where the window is open.

Free agents can still sign terms but only if they were free in the window.

Although announced today it could very well have happened yesterday. He's being linked to Sunderland.

Would make more sense, otherwise the player is leaving himself fubarred for a few months.

The rule for transfers outside of the window is that unattached/free agents/players can be signed by a club at any time during the season, if they had been released by their previous club before the end of the transfer window. Therefore if Zakaria was released before Wednesday's 11pm BST deadline he could be signed by another club at any point this season.

As regards loans, as of this season I believe only the actual emergency loans of goalkeepers will be permitted, so no longer can FL clubs bring in a load of players under the guise of being emergencies. This is now in line with the PL.

Non-league clubs are presumably exempt from the loan restrictions.
