Loafer I thought you lot were not absolute fannies about pitch invasions and rightfully defending yourselves

Something has changed. Maybe supporting Reading has made you all soft because our pitch invasions are all high fives, hugs and kisses

I suspect the fan who did it was giving him all sorts of abuse looked like he was calling him a vvanker, viera should have knocked him out

Eh? Literally everyone is saying Viera was right to react.

Are they?

Yes. Can you read?

Of all the people to square up to, why would you choose Patrick Vieira? He's hard as fcuk. Even Roy Keane admitted he wouldn't want to fight him one-on-one

NathStPaul A side issue - Why are the away changing rooms still on the other side of the ground at Everton? If both changing rooms are in the normal place, lasts nights incident doesn't happen.

Can't believe the people in charge of crowd management at Goodison didn't think a pitch invasion wasn't 99.9% likely to happen. If you're not going to stop fans getting on the pitch which is pretty much impossible the least you should do is have 20-30 security people to escort the away management team from the dugout to the dressing rooms.

I wonder what it's going to take for the English game to get on top of these crowd issues where fans are flooding the pitch going after players/managers as well as the incidents as throwing objects onto the pitch as well.

To be fair it has happened for years and years, it is being highlighted more at the moment and rightfully so. I am hoping the FA come down hard on it with the clubs in question, there is no excuse for inadequate provisions being made to protect players and managers. Everton would have known full well that if the team won last night there was going to be a pitch invasion. Surely you bring in extra police to secure the stands and there are enough stewards to run on to the pitch immediately and stand with a Crystal Palace player.

You also have the complete idiocy of making the Palace players cross the pitch to get to their changing room at Goodison. Just let them in the main tunnel areas ffs.

Its very simple - mass pitch invastion (mass being operative word to eliminate opposing fans making out its home support) means a deduction of 3 or 4 points. If play off scenario = game is awarded to opposition.

That will stop it immediately. Are they brave enough to do it?

It really hasn't, pitch invasions have but the going after players is a new thing, see also every bellend apparently being able to bring a flare in with them

Attacking players during pitch invasions has been added to the list of modern day football sh*t things just after 'please can I have your shirt?' signs

I think it's always been there, it's just more documented now and probably happens more often now than before. I've always said that netting around the pitch/front of the stands would stop objects being thrown on the pitch but I can't imagine it would stop a horde of fans getting onto the pitch if they wanted to, it would also hack fans off because of the "view" (everyone loves a moan).

Agree though about flares becoming more prominent, also seen the new ban on class A drugs at football games being up to 5 years. That's fine, but why not just have sniffer dogs on the doors with the stewards so that fans can't get in with such substances?

At the least I'd like to see behind closed doors games coming into play. Once a few idiots ruin the football for the majority of sensible supporters you might see a change.

Don’t think the netting is a terrible idea. They have it at NHL games because well no one wants a 6oz disc of vulcanised rubber hurtling towards their head at 100mph. Went to see one when I was in Pittsburgh and I think I noticed it for the first 5 minutes but after that it was fine and didn’t hinder my ability to follow the game.

Would also stop idiots throwing the ball around in the stand.

There would have to be some sort of safety release though.

Yeah I've been to a game in Germany where there was netting, same thing really, noticed it initially but didn't really after about 10 minutes, but of course you'd have someone moaning at the idea as you normally do.

Lampard took over 6th placed Derby and got them to finish 6th, took over 4th placed Chelsea and got them to finish 4th, and took over 16th placed Everton and so far has them in 16th

I've got no real issue with celebratory pitch invasions but I do think that you're fair game if you behave like a twat.
