WestYorksRoyal It looks like Barca will raise up to €1bn this summer ny selling shares of future TV and merchandising revenue. Short termism in the extreme. They may sign some talented players, but long term they will find it harder to complete. And last time they spent big on players with the Neymar money it didn't really work out.
It is far worse than that.
Laporte (the Barcelona Chairman) has sold 25% of their next 25 years La Liga TV revenue to a US lender called Sixth Street in 2 tranches; the first 10% was valued at €207.5M, so whilst the 2nd tranche of 15% didn't have an official valuation, €310M seems about right., so over €500M in total..........they are relying upon the European Court of Justice to reject UEFA's banning of the European Super League, and if that happens (so they believe) they will be as rich as those teams backed by National funds such as Man City, PSG and Newcastle.
Meanwhile, they spunk nearly €50M in transfer fees on a 4 yr contract for a 34 Robert Lewandowski (whose signing on fee, agents fees and salary will probably take that to well beyond €100M) and are hoping to get 32 yr old Ceasar Azpilicueta from Chelsea on a 6 yr deal.
The Barcelona Chairman feels able to pile all this debt onto the club because it all goes onto the members - ordinary fans; they are able to do this because previously, the Chairman and his board used to have to PERSONALLY guarantee 15% of each season's projected budget, and were liable for any losses. However, at the end of last Year a law was passed that ended this requirement, so now each individual memeber will have an equal share of the liability of 100% of all debts of the club. This allows the Chairman to splurge not only other peoples money (in effect, the fans) but also the abilaity for future Barcelona Chairmen to raise funds.
If the ESL does get the green light from the European Courts, the 2 people who will get the biggest share of the (predicted) gazillions from the TV rights will be Laporte and his Real Madrid couterpart, Florentino Perez.
The word corrupt simply doesn't do it justice.
