but legally, pretty much impossible to prove that his participation had anything to do with the actual result, I’d have thought.

Smoke and fire and all that but I can’t see it really - he’s probably been the best midfielder in the PL this season and it seems unlikely to me he could play that well with that hanging over him.

I take it in most cases a bookie wouldn’t know as a player would bet through a third party, but if a player did ever directly try to place a bet on a game in which they would likely be involved shouldn’t the bookie refuse the bet and report that player to the player’s club and or FA/FL?

Pretty much, yes. I'm involved with a team that considered giving him a try but as soon as his name was mentioned alarm bells rung. Not specifically for this, but just the expectation that him and dodgy dealings are never far away from each other.

He then signed for Falkirk for rest of the season before joining Mandurah City in Australia for a couple of months. Apparently he’s been training with Livingston since he returned in October while looking for another club. All seems a bit soon to be bemoaning anything given many clubs - at the level he’d be - are perhaps “fully staffed” until at least January.
