StrandedWinston BiscuitStranded Quite like how Serie A doesn't relegate based on anything other than points. So same points, play-off time.
Its a new thing they have introduced from this season. Both the title and relegation will go to play offs if teams are level on points. Apart from if 3 teams are level on points for relegation where they use a mini league system and the team highest on that doesn't go into the play offs. It was something they had back in Serie up to 04-05 but scrapped it.
Not the biggest fan of it personally. Feels like trying to create more drama just for the sake of drama. Plus obviously it means teams are being split in the same league table using different methods, which just seems like nonsensical silliness.
See the reservation but I like it - I don't think it really matters if 14th and 15th are split on GD but relegation rivals aren't as finishing midtable has no impact. Yes it adds additional drama but you could always argue that relegating on GD could see a single result magnified over the season. For example, there are only 3 goals between them (both scored 31, Spezia let in 3 less) in this situation you could feasibly end up in a situation where say Verona had a player sent off in one game, which they lose 4-0 as a result - red card is then overturned.
My issue around the splitting by different methods thing is probably more at the other end of the table. Champions League qualification is decided by H2H, but 1st & 2nd are not. Just seems a bit silly to me. Also if 3 teams end on the same relegation points, then 1 of those teams is saved by H2H but the other 2 are not (which happened in 04-05) . which also just seems a silly way to do things.
But then I am basing my argument on an 'all things must be equal' basis, which I usually argue against, so maybe I am the one being silly here tbf. Top level sport is there for entertainment, and if its decided people will be more entertained by having play offs then why not?! I freakin love the EFL play offs!
