Snowflake Royal Worst thing about that is it means we have to play on that heap of shit next season.

WestYorksRoyal Really really disappointing, but I guess it doesn't matter. Need to find a way of stemming goals conceded away if we want to challenge for top 6 next season.

Also really lacking in creativity aside from Wing. Goals from a FK and PK, Azeez hasn't offered much for a while now. Wide areas top priority area to strengthen.

This is it. We've found a player to build this team around on Wing. We need to improve at the back defensively from our DMs and Wingers. Azeez definitely must improve his defending game. As good as Azeez and Knibbs are going forward their crossing isn't adequate and we nerd this side to improve

Don't worry, in about the last three years you've never got it, so I'd give up trying.

Ascotexgunner Another pathetic away performance. What does Selles say to them away that he doesn't say at home. We have a serious problem that looks like it will continue next season the way we are going. Something is wrong.

Another pathetic performance? Excluding the top three, that was only our second away defeat since the 11th November

46 goals conceded in 23 away games is a concern mind, worst away defensive record two seasons in a row now

I'm starting to dislike Burton, they keep getting one over on us and yesterday was no different. All 3 goals looked sloppy from a defensive viewpoint or they were just lucky that rebounds kept falling to a free player. Their second goal was just woeful from us.

Great free kick from Wing and nice to finally get a penalty but other wise we didn't really trouble their keeper and never really looked like getting the equaliser. The crowd and inflatables were a bit subdued, and Burton have also started signing Three Little Birds so even that was lame.

Prematch we went to the Beech hotel, it's geared up well to fleece away fans and there was quite a crowd there. Also had a pint at the ground and was quite bemused that "The Brewers" didn't actually have any brews on sale, just lager and Worthington Creamflow. The security getting in was a bit officious, I took objection to the guy rooting through my coat pocket. Seem completely unnecessary.

WestYorksRoyal Burton are so poor. If they win this, it'll be 2 points from our fixtures with them, Fleetwood and Shrewsbury. Incredible.

You could just as well substitute Reading for Burton in your post.
We are not very good-we have had some decent performances over the season but the table only lies because of the points deductions and without them we would still be miles off the top 6 and a distance off top 2.

It is going to take some fantastic rebuilding to challenge in the next couple of seasons IMHO but if Azeez does go to Plymouth that will probably mean that we then play with a right-footed right winger bringing a better balance to the forward line and hopefully somebody who will track back.
I don't think he would be as much a miss as Bindon but if Bindon were to be sold we might at least have some money to afford the wages of a few loan signings or freebies.

Otherwise Yiadom, Wing ,Knibbs and Smith can form the nucleus of a side but we need an Elliott of the past few weeks, a Craig of some earlier games and a Kelvin of the start of the season to get somewhere towards a reasonable eleven-Mola, Dorsett and Makuiru and possibly Mbengue aren't the answers in their positions, Dean and Hutchinson can go .
Savage needs to do more and who knows with Abrefa?

As others have said elsewhere the best thing about this season has not very often been on the pitch but the connection between players and fans-long may that continue.

One definite positive. Elliott has really grown into the team when played centrally where it has been blindingly obvious all season he would be best. I had definite doubts he could do it that deep, but he's been good and Wing has covered well at the back.

We have an excellent prospect there to give Knibbs competition in behind Smith.

I also think Ehibhatiomhan might do quite well in that hole. He's not going to lead the line and do well with balls banged in to his head and chest against two big CBs, but I would like to see him get some more time upfront, preferably in a pair.

Christ some of our fans were unbearable yesterday. Crying and whinging at every decision in the 1st half, chucking of objects in what was a meaningless end of season match.

Agreed. Decent little boozer, efficient, well priced, and friendly. What wasn't to like?

An old fashioned idea perhaps but at our lowly level I think the better set up is to have a winger playing on his "correct" side and being able to cross a ball that comes away from the keeper when using the player's best foot.
IMHO by playing the left -footer on the right it means that the player will often come inside to add to the midfield or when Scholes or Rooney for example were pushed out wide left for England they overcrowded the midfield and brought an imbalance to the set up.

Also Silva, Foden and Saka don't have exceptional pace so they aren't able to beat their man on the outside so well and cross with their much weaker right foot.
It may just be a current fashion-Villa also do it, as do Spurs and Liverpool but maybe there is just a dearth of natural right wingers around.
At our level I feel that an orthodox winger would suit us better because the midfield players don't have the skill and dexterity to cope well with wingers cutting in and making up the 5 man midfield.

Oh for the days of Stanley Matthews and even our beloved Steve Coppell who never played on the left. .or a Ronaldo, Charlton or Figo who were genuinely two-footed and could play on either side.

Anyway, let's see what Reading do next season.

I get trying to defend your position, but to say that Foden, for example, doesn’t have exceptional pace is ignoring what’s obvious

All the right wingers are playing on the left

It's all down to what you want your wingers to do.

If you have two strikers who are strong in the air, you want your wingers to play on their 'correct' side and specialise in crossing. But there's not a lot of point in having wingers do that if you don't have bodies in the box to attack those crosses who are good at turning them in.

Alternatively, you might want your wingers on the 'wrong' side to cut inside around the box and shoot. In which case there's not a lot of point playing two strikers who are good in the air.

The latter just happens to be popular now. The game has changed so that hitting the byline and swinging 20 crosses in a game isn't going to get you the same return it used to.

Traditional wingers getting crosses in need bodies in the box to be effective. Today, most teams play 3 central midfielders and only 1 up front, as they want to compete for possession. That means the returns simply don't exist on traditional wing play. Of course you could try returning to 4-4-2, but in the Championship and PL you'd get dominated for possession every game (it may work in L1 though).

A 5-3-2 wing back formation could be a way of overcoming this.

A formation I think we're not that far from being able to deliver...

Yiadom.................................Carson
...............Wing.............Savage

For example.
