When was the last major tournament (euros/world cup) where lots were drawn to determine group placings?

It's a totally nutty system. Also that a team with fewer points, say 3, can progress to the next round, rather than one with more (say 4) due to their placing in the group.

Have often said that when there are "best losers" going through then it needs to be done on each sides record rather than finishing 3rd and then record - would mostly be essentially the same but would avoid scenarios where a team can go out with more points than a team that qualifies.

It doesn't seem fair, but due to the group system unavoidable I guess.

Under current thinking yes hence the suggestion - move to an NFL wild card model - best records qualify, if it means all 4 sides from a group make it, so be it.

I dunno, that's literally luck of the draw and is part of big tournaments like this. Arguably part of the appeal as well.
