Brogue Only once have all three of the promoted sides to the premier league been relegated. It was 1997/98 season.

It’s very much looking like this season will the second season.

So Luton, Sheffield Utd and Burnley last year was just a figment of everyone's imagination then?

I find this astonishing. Jaap Stam only played two full seasons, and 79 league games in total, for Manchester United. He was injured for much of this third season and left for Lazio that summer. He also only scored one United goal. Obviously had it wrong - but I had Stam down as a central defender who weighed in with a few goals, and who was synonymous with United's success at that time. Would have guessed he had played 200 times for the club, at least.

was looking up some info yesterday on trophy wins and was surprised to see Phil Neal as the most successful English footballer at a European level, there on his own with 4 European Cup wins.

I lazily made the assumption that there was a small core of Liverpool players together through those 4 wins (77 - 84) but it was only Neal that was there for them all.

5 players share the title of most European Cup/Champions League wins of 6. 2 of those players (Modric & Carvajal) are playing in this seasons

Liverpool have scored at least 2 goals in their last 18 home games in all competitions. No club has a longer streak than this since 1934-1935, when Sunderland did so in 19 consecutive home games.

Their next home game is Southampton so think you can be fairly certain in this weird world that they won’t reach 19 :o

That can't be an up to date stat, surely?

It might just be, but surely they've had a second half collapse in the last few years?

I did read separately that United haven't ever lost a home game after taking a 2-0 lead.

Edit: also, I'd love a 'cricinfo' type football website where I can look up this kind of stat.

i did some digging and it is an up to date stat, absolutely mental isn't it?

and as an aside, whilst investigating and confirming that stat i came across another, now this one i assume is out of date, but i found an article dated September 2022 man utd had only ever lost 4 games in the premier league when leading at HT. This may have changed now, but i also found that shocking .

That’s nothing, Reading have won every single won of their games where they’ve been winning when the final whistle was blown.

We had that run of about 2 years where we won every single game we were winning at HT.

Up until 2008 there had only ever been 1 club from the top 5 leagues to win the treble (Man Utd 1999)

In the 16 seasons since then there has been another 6 (PSG and Barcelona could make that 7 still this season)

I've recently come across a Facebook page called "the English Football Record" which is absolutely mind blowing in terms of the stats and facts people put out in that. Definitely worth a follow.

Man United's 20 league titles were under just 3 managers. Liverpool's 20 was under 10 different managers.

Titles won, and % of titles won in that country overall:

Benfica 38 - 42.4%
Real Madrid 36 - 38.7%
Ajax 29 - 33%
Juventus 36 - 30%
Bayern 33 - 29.5%
Man Utd 20 - 15.9%
Liverpool 20 - 15.9%

The list is a bit arbitrary.
Take Portugal, Porto have won 30 titles (33.3%, so comparable to Ajax in that list) and Porto have won 20 (22.2%, so comparable to the two UK clubs listed).

Portugal's a bit of a joke. 88 of 90 titles won by those three, Belenenses in 1946 and Boavista in 2001 the only other two teams to win the thing.

Off top of head, only two spells post-war when any other teams had a crack. Late 50s to mid 60s, when even Kilmarnock won it, and the perhaps more famous early 80s spell when Dundee won it followed by Fergie's Aberdeen.

Aberdeen's 24/25 season needs to be studied. For betting trends, or food poisoning, or ancient spirits affecting Pittodrie,or who knows what. So odd. Looked like they would trouble the top this season. And then they didn't.

First 11 games - W10 D1 L0 F24 A10 Pts 31
Next 14 games - W0 D4 L10 F8 A28 Pts 4
Next 9 games - W5 D3 L1 F14 A12 Pts 18

Portugal - not only the domination in terms of titles, but in the last decade only Braga (third in 2019-20) have managed to crash even the top 3 positions.

In 24 seasons since Boavista's title in 2000-01, just six occurrences of teams outside of the 'big 3' finishing in the top three in the league table.

Braga - 3 (2nd 2009-10, 3rd 2011-12, 3rd 2019-20)
Vitoria - 1 (3rd, 2007-08)
FC Pacos de Ferreira - 1 (3rd 2012-13)
Boavista - 1 (2nd 2001-02)
