MATCHWATCH : Lincoln City (h)

by Sutekh » 15 Apr 2025 08:30

When : Friday April 18 2024, 3pm
Where : SCL Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Just over 1 year since they last came to town, Lincoln City are back to try and prevent Reading collecting 3 more points in their quest to claim the last play off place.

The Imps are your typical end of season mid table obscurity side so have nothing to play for but, at this stage of a season, that could count in their favour as they won’t get quite so nervous if a game develops with the scores level.

Lincoln’s form is what you’d expect for a mid table side with 4 wins and 3 draws from their last 11 league games. James Collins and Jovon Makama are leading scorers with 7 goals each and, of course, they have the obligatory ex Reading threat in Ben House (5 goals so far) to cause more problems. After that Tendayi Darikwa will be a big threat at set pieces and Bailey Cadamarteri has been putting in a decent shift during his loan spell from Sheffield Wednesday.

None of these remaining games will be easy for Reading, especially if they let nerves get the better of them. This game could be a prime example of that especially if a slow start builds and fan frustration starts transmitting itself to the players. Its been a long time since the club was involved in an end of season promotion “charge” and it’s a first time for nearly all the players as well so they’ll all be learning so don’t expect an uneventful “glide” to finish the season.

Injuries really aren’t helping still. There’s still no Elliott or Dorsett and Dean is still a few weeks away from a return while Craig is out for the season.

Other important L1 games on Good Friday to watch for:

Bolton v Wycombe
Huddersfield v Cambridge
Leyton Orient v Barnsley
Stevenage v Blackpool

Referee

Benjamin Speedie

Previously

27 Apr 24 > Reading 3-2 Blackpool
16 Mar 24 > Reading 4-0 Cambridge United
15 Aug 23 > Reading 1-0 Cheltenham

Historically

This will be the 14th home game against the Imps and the record at home to Lincoln isn't much to write home about with 5 Reading wins compared to 3 Lincoln wins, so games tend to be close fought and can be very frustrating affairs.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel to the Mad Stad
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalTV subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Indeed! Via the Sky Red Button or the NOW app (so long as you’re subscribed to Sky Sports of course).

Anyone have any idea on ticket sales? has the potential to be the biggest crowd of the season what with the holiday weekend, league position and everything else going on. Lincoln may well bring a decent amount as the travel pretty well.

Looking like around 15k, but Lincoln have only sold 300 which is surprising.

Not really, horrible trip down the A1 & M25 on a BH for basically a dead rubber for them.

Noel confirmed Pereira & Wing ok, the other injuries progressing but unlikely to be involved yet.

Hound Elliott seems to have been injured for a long time

It was already known that he'd be out until the end of the season wasn't it? Maybe back for the play-offs was always the prognosis as far as I was aware.

Hunt said 12 weeks about 16 weeks ago. Long term injuries are hard to manage though.

With attendances this low for a bank holiday match in good weather at the business end of a season in the play offs, I do wonder whether we would even sell out a play-off home leg, which seems mad.

fwiw, we didn't quite sell out Fulham (A) last time - attendance down as 22,044 which is 1000 short of maximum that season. There were empty seats around me.

I guess the TV factor means some people in the catchment choose to save money and watch on TV. I find it mad that we could sell 30,000 for wembley but not sell out the madstad for the play-off which is much more convenient

Makes perfect sense to me. How many chances do you have to visit Wembley to watch your team? We've been quite a lot, but its still only three visits in 20 years isn’t it?

Swansea, Huddersfield, Arsenal.

By contrast we've had double or triple the PO Semi's or later cup stage matches at home.

Its the sort of thing that regulars take casual fans to. Or people's first match. My mum and nephew have seen us at Wembley, but they've been to probably less than 10 games ever at the Mad Stad.

15k home fans isn’t to be sniffed at is it?

Regular Saturday at 3 would make this 17k plus. Perfectly ok I’d have thought

Lincoln will be without Jovon Makama due to injury and Paudie O’Connor through suspension.

Club 1871 looks sold out for this. I wish I was going, but am away. I hope we can get a win today. Fingers crossed 2-0.

I don't think so. I think they stopped doing it several weeks ago.
