Away day - seating or unreserved

by katweslowski » 23 Apr 2025 14:02

I should be old enough to not care about this. But I've seen on social media from some of our youth fans mainly, snipey, whiney comments which make me uncomfortable. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but it's true. Especially as I often go to away games on my own.

The comments are things like:

The "you're in my seat" brigade are out again today

And

Guy says "that's my seat". I'm like, so what?

My ticket for Bristol rovers was selected by seat where I picked one on the end. I don't mind reserve seating if it's official but otherwise you just risk someone else coming along wanting their seat

It's childish nonsense but I wanted to know from more frequent away fans, is it just generally "sit where you want"? I've always just gone to the seat number on the ticket

Thanks

Unreserved seating is something that only very, very rarely happens.
You literally pick a seat from the map, so yeah, that is your seat.

I'm quite pushy on it - if I have the choice, I will pick halfway up and behind the goal - but then again I've picked seats that were basically on their own (Bristol C away, Brum away, Derby away) to avoid having to deal with a scrote.
Even on, say, Wycombe away in 2019, it wasn't unreserved but the dickheads were out in force. I gave up the seat I was meant to have and went to the much quieter far side of the stand.

If the game is in any way busy, then it only makes sense to sit where you're meant to be.

From the last time ...

Home games says

The majority of fixtures we operate reserved seating and you need to sit in the seat allocated to you. Our home section in the south Stand operated by Reading FC fan group Club 1871 operate unreserved seating.

For some smaller cup games and friendlies we may choose to operate unreserved seating which means you can sit in any seat within the stand/area that you have selected and any seat details on your booking confirmation can be ignored.

We will communicate if a match is unreserved seating in the selling information.

Away games says
Yes, supporters will be able to select the exact available seat they would like to sit in. Supporters who prefer to be in a more ‘family-friendly’ environment or may need to be seated for the duration of the match are usually advised to select lower rows depending on the away stadium layout.

Away games, you literally pick a seat. Other than the odd few on a terrace, how can this be unreserved?
So, yeah, other than early rounds of cups and friendlies, I'm going with this doesn't really exist unless explicitly stated otherwise.

There were a few away games i've been to where there was absolutely no way you'd have been able to get to your seat. There were some where I barely got into the stand!

It varies from game to game. I think Saturday for instance will be reserved seating because those who wanted to stand had an opportunity to go in the terrace. Mansfield I wasn't directly in my seat although close enough for me to no kick up a fuss.

If its busy, 100%. If there's plenty of space, I'd just sit where I want.

If it's fairly busy and someone tells me that's their seat I'll move. If there's lots of space, they'd get a 'seriously' face and a does it really matter, but I'll roll my eyes and move if they persist.

At Mansfield there were some scrotes in our seats but they moved when asked. I can understand it if they want to be with their mates and their seats are separated, but when it's sold out you need to sit where your ticket says.

Yeah. I think the 'I want my seat regardless' brigade need to recognise it can be hard to coordinate seating for a group of people, especially teens. And if there's plenty of space, there's zero harm.

But if its busy you can't expect to sit together if you didn’t book together.

Just everyone be a bit nicer and accommodating

Do kind of think that you can't rock up at 2.55 and expect your seats then. It's almost impossible to get anywhere near them then, as nowhere can match the Mad Stad's legroom space.

I do spend an inordinate amount of time picking seats on the website and more often than not don't get to stand or sit there.

As a person who likes to sit in his ticketed seat, this unwritten, all seats are unreserved at away games does annoy me and almost turns me off going. But as a rule of thumb, if you want to stand and chant all game, get a seat near the back, otherwise go nearer the front.

As someone who prioritises time in the pub over time in the ground - unallocated doesn't really suit me. If I wanted the cheap seats I'd have ordered them.
