From Despair To Where? Local journalism's been on its arse for 20 years, mainly because of the internet

Corrected for you

Which leads me back to my edit

Independent bloggers, vloggers and podcasts are able to provide decent content, not sure why publishers can't.

Which again leads back to the original point that why should someone like Huang Kad be considered less reputable than local journalists when he's basically feeding off the same scraps and consistently beats them to the punch.

If Reading4eva can set up an interview with Couhig.....????

It will be interesting to see what sort of relationship BBC Berkshire can maintain with the club given that Couhig has been openly critical of Dellor.

There is still a slight sniffiness about newer forms of media. Somehow.

It is a bit similar to the reactions to that Bournemouth fan, but how does he get an indepth interview with Couhig and no-one else?

Who was the fan that got the interview with Selles about management? Absolutely enthralling interview getting a solid insight into the guy's mentality. Didn't see Ady and Mick joking about the lack of sausage rolls.

Just on a side note, the death of local media has been sudden and sad. When I was playing local football up there, I used to love that the Manchester Evening Post used to give us a couple of lines, list the scorers, plus a proper write up once in a while. (Yes, I have dug out the clipping from when I won Player's Player of the Season). What's been notable is how many of the websites, that could do a solid job, have just become click bait and pop-ups.

Nearly everyone is openly critical of Dellor though. And presume the club will need media on their side, which Dellor largely is however annoying people find him.

You're missing the key differential in all of this, which is advertising. Local journalism has never really existed to provide quality, relevant and objective news. It had to provide quality, relevant and objective news in order to get people to buy the papers, which were full of adverts - the main business aim was to bring views to advertisers.

But the internet has decimated advertising revenues. No-one's going to spend money in the Evening Post to reach a few thousand pairs of eyes when for the same money they can target adverts exactly to their desired demographic through FB, IG, Youtube etc.

So local journalism is becoming more and more centralised and much lower quality - Reach plc, who own all the "Placename Live" sites openly say that they value clicks ahead of quality, and pay their writers on that basis. They share content across all their many sites and there's absolutely no value to them of covering stories like Couhig - it won't bring any pair of eyes to their site so won't sell any advertising, so it's seen as completely wasted effort. So local journalism doesn't effectively exist any more - it has no real funding, and is only there to pay lip service to the idea of providing a "local service" - which it doesn't.

That explains why publishers don't give a flying fcuk about stuff like this - so the void is filled by people who do care, and have their "niche" as being in the know. There's no money in it unless they get bucketloads of followers, but there's a type of glory, and many people have launched careers on the strength of their internet presence.

But yes - people who actually care or are building their niche certainly are as good as or better than local "journalists" so I'm not going to argue with your central point.

As for Dellor - he has a track record of backtracking and always trying to take the path of least resistance, so I'd expect him to do whatever he needs to do to be as noncontroversial and inoffensive as possible - at the same time avoiding trying to probe deeply or find out anything interesting or different, lest it upsets the status quo.

Firstly, Dai HAS to divest Reading FC by May 5th or we are out of the EFL and its value will be zero; therefore, saying it will happen "this coming week" without producing and sharing any evidence or proof is merely someone taking a punt to look ITK; if it doesn't happen "by Friday" you can guarantee there will be a plausible reason for it not being got over the line, and the original claim will be all but forgotten as we face up to the reality that our club might be out of the Football League come the end of the May Bank Holiday.

That having been said, I REALLY REALLY hope that this IS true; this has been so destructive an episode for the football club, the fans, the players, the employees, those small companies that have supplied goods and services and are waiting for that criminal conman to pay them, that I am prepared to suspend my scepticism to "rumours" and fervently pray to the old gods and the new that it is finally happening.

Sadly, Dirk - this is completely true.

To use FB as an example, how many "placename live" (Reach) stories are in your feed? - how many of them are relevent to where you live? It's all clickbait nonsense - unfortunately the days of journos caring are long behind us - it's all about clicks and revenue streams....

I personally will be pleased with Couhig as an owner from what I can see, mainly because he has fought tooth and nail for the club already. The last 3 owners haven't cared, but he really wants us. Bringing in that passion can only be a good thing.

He's got a bit too much cockiness about him with the Turtle and swagger on the last deal, and all the 'I can force this or that' this time for my tastes.

But when you're looking at a new owner, it's hard to see how you can do better than a guy with a good track record at another club in the same country and division. Certainly compared to the previous charlatans like Zingarevich and Dai, or sports washing Saudi moral vaccuums, shadowy investment groups or crazy attention whores like Storey.

To be fair to Ian, I prefer my septuagenarian club owners to drunkenly accost Paloma Faith in the middle of a gig.

I, for one, will welcome our new Overlord.

However, as has been said before, picking holes in how he may behave as owner is like someone in a burning plane moaning about the colour of the parachute silk.

Right now, NOTHING else matters other than Dai selling Reading FC on or before May 5th.

Yes, my only emotion is “isn’t it nice that we haven’t folded”.

Also, feel pleased for the people who work for the club in any capacity who now don’t have to worry about getting paid, and that’s about it.

I’m not sure it is necessary to jump to any conclusions about what Couhig may or may not be like as an owner based on a couple of minor PR stunts. As has been pointed out our ‘greatest ever owner’ had more than his fair share of cringe worthy moments. If Couhig gets the keys to the stadium this week he starts in my mind with an utterly clean sheet.
I’ll judge him on what he does immediately, then what he does over the summer and the. He can have at least next season to become either hero or villain.
He may have to make some tough, unpopular decisions but if they are part of a proper plan with the interest of the club at heart we’ll probably have to accept them. He’s buying a house with potential but in much need of immediate maintenance and then serious improvement. That won’t happen without knocking down some walls, replacing the roof and complete rewiring. Will be nice when it’s finished….

I think some people may be reading rather too much into my, very, minor personal taste criticism.

Or like Dan Miller says in The Thick Of It, you can't make an omelette without having a full and frank discussion with the eggs.
