Shaun Goater. One good season, one not so good season iirc, and quickly eclipsed by those who came after.

Lloyd Owusu - Coppell stop gap until he could bring in someone good. Owuuusuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

Mark McKeever

I remember him playing in the 4-0 win away at Stoke (I thought he scored two, but the website says only one), and I thought he was going to tear up the league, but he quickly disappeared into non-league.

Looking at his Wikipedia page, I read why: "However, over the following weeks, Stoke full-back Jason Kavanagh made a full catalogue of Division Two wingers look like Best at his peak."

Our very own "Cult Hero" Alex Fernandez from Espanyol. Played 10 games and scored a screamer against Huddersfield in the Cup. For some reason he hardly ever got played which was very harsh as the guy was a great player i guess just maybe not the right fit and he ended up falling in love with the club and fans :D
Still playing today for Cadiz in Spain.

That was the season we had 6 loanees but were only allowed to pick 5 in the match day squad so it was a toss up between him and the left back from Wigan who's name completely escapes me (Taylor?) as to who missed out.

Of the other loanees, Hector was pretty much a guaranteed starter and it wouldn't surprise me if Piazon, Vydra and John had clauses stipulating they start if fit.

Who was that Argentinian loanee we got from Italy who was highly rated but was absolute bobbins?

Franconian Royal Matejovsky comes to mind, though I never saw him play for us in our first time in the Prem.
Going back further:
There was a ginger haired fella (not Sidwell), who played around the end of Elm Park period, Welsh I believe.
And I’ll see your Rashawn Scott and raise you the other Scott (from Wycombe, tall fella, who always stood in front of opposition when they took throw ins).

Think I remember that ginger fella. Perhaps his name was O'Neill

Lucas Boye, played RW i believe. His career actually took off after leaving Reading, go figure, and has scored 23 goals in 100 appearances for Elche in the Spanish top flight and was called up to the Argentine national team alongside Messi in 2022.

Peter Castle l believe still hold the record for Readings youngest ever player. We were 3-0 up away at Watford. He came on for the final 15 minutes. He never played professional football again. And yet his name is on the board of acadamy players who played for the first team. With the like of Gylfie,Long and Olisie.

I'm starting to look into that - how many of our academy graduates actually had a decent career?

Of the 90 graduates, 22 played less than 900 minutes of professional football (ie. 10 full matches) as of 10th September. Of those, ten are still with the club and only three aren't currently active in football. 36 have played less than 4140 minutes (ie. 46 full matches) so far - all but five are still active (fifteen are active with us).

Also will be worth mentioning the level these professional minutes are at, but that's another point.

Boye was clearly talented but

Nicknamed El Tanque (The Tank) or El Toro (The Bull),

these are jokes, the guy was not up to the pace and impact of Championship. I went to a few cup games that season where he inevitably looked a bit better.

Better than Ayub Masika, that's for sure.

And lets not forget Bongani Khumalo and Joao Virginia. I also keep forgetting we took Glen Murray on loan as well.

Who was they guy who had the nickname "The Beast" who came on as a substitute in his first game (might have been the first game of the season?) and scored a thunderbolt?

Mathieu Manset against Millwall at home on the opening day, possibly around 2011?

I try quite hard to forget Bongani Khumalo. The absolute worst defender I've ever seen. I play with people I'd trust more to play CB.

Looking at his Wikipedia page, I read why: "However, over the following weeks, Stoke full-back Jason Kavanagh made a full catalogue of Division Two wingers look like Best at his peak."

Jason Kavanagh scored a OG for Reading whilst playing for Derby County, in a 1-0 win (well, a loss for him) at Elm Park in 1994/5
