I'm amazed to be honest that Liverpool have 'let' this transfer happen. How were they not all over Guehi to make sure he moved to them?

No guarantee of CL, and the possibility of Slot being sacked prolly don't help

'I've moved to the best club in the country'. Or words to that effect.

You're right, their performances in the last couple of months have probably done it, but the speed with which this deal fell apart for Liverpool is weird.

Not when you have FSG as owners. They’ll say they did their bit in the summer - but seemingly with no real logic or plan - now they’ve reverted to type and it’s back to the usual. Don’t think they’ll sign anyone in this January window despite the desperate defensive issues at the club. Strikes me that they’re just happy with CL qualification and with a top 5 finish likely to be sufficient again  even Slot will have trouble failing. Issue they have now is that they’ve felt the Anfield crowd starting to turn, which generally is rarer than a principled politician, which might make them think.

One thing I’ve noticed is that on the last day of the summer window they agreed to buy Guehi for £35m and also to loan Elliott to Villa with a £35m sale clause triggered by certain criteria. Villa have now made it clear they don’t want Elliott. Wonder if that has had any bearing on the failure to bother with Guehi in this window in favour of waiting for the “free in the summer” option.

Also talk of Mateta to Villa. Glasner's got one foot out the door too. Chance of Palace going down this season? You'd think the gap is too big, but they're a bit of a mess at the moment.

Potentially. Feel for Elliott, I think he was under-used at Liverpool, now in a no man's land as Slot doesn't want him back.

If Liverpool knew they were loaning Harvey Elliot out to Villa, and he could return mid season, then bringing him on as a 96th minute sub against Newcastle at the start of the season feels like a really unprofessional and silly thing to have done

Is Elliott able to go out on loan abroad?

Because of FIFA’s utterly ***** stupid brain-dead rule that says players cannot play for more than 2 clubs in a season Harvey is stuffed as he’s already played for Villa and Liverpool. His only options to get a game again this season are

1. Take FIFA to court as their rule is presumably breaching restraint of trade (some bright spark will do it at some point when, as usual  there’s a lot of money involved)
2. Hope Liverpool and Villa come to an arrangement whereby he can play for them again (unlikely for Liverpool until Slot gets the push)
3. Get a loan to a club in a league, like the MLS, that operates on a different seasonal calendar to UEFA.
