Armadillo Roadkill Thanks for that - really useful and an interesting read. Good answers to all of the questions, and grounds to believe we're heading in the right direction.

Thanks. He came across very well and seems like an all round top bloke. It certainly wasn't one of these events where the manager is there because they feel they have to be. Felt like he really wanted the opportunity to speak to the fans.

Hound It’s a really good read, thanks Clyde. Very encouraging imo, does seem to see the issues a lot of us seem to in terms of no outlet ball, lack of pace up front etc

Pretty much agree with everything he says in there

Thank you. I think that's the biggest thing, he's identified the issues we've had and acknowledges there's no quick fix.

He pushed the 'lack of pre-season' issue a lot, which suggests we're having to play in a more turgid way than he would want due to the fitness concerns. Will be very interesting to see how having a good pre-season may impact our performances, although we'll have to do most of our transfer business a lot earlier than we did this term.

Snowflake Royal Given we've started scoring set piece goals, and at a decent rate, I don’t see why we'd want to change

Our corners are generally poor in my opinion. Savage and Wing can ping a good ball but we never seem to get any players anywhere near the ball- just to predictable as well.

I believe just prior to Hunt being sacked we were the only side in the EFL who hadn't scored from a set piece this season so we've obviously picked up from there.

Corners are notoriously shit to score from... I recall some stats donkeys years ago, maybe Coppell/McDermott era... that teams scored on average about 4 goals a season direct from corners.

Though that’s changing isn’t it - not filtered down through the divs yet but how many corners have Arsenal and Chelsea scored from this year? It’s all Arsenal seem to score…

tidus_mi2 Do we need to do the Arsenal strat and crowd the 6 yard box?

Anyone old enoguh to rember early/mid 70s - Gordon Cummings perfect corners to the near post, where rises the lofty Les Chappell (all 5' 8" of him  ) to nod into the net

Simpler times !!!

Obviously any average will have a couple of exceptions.

Trouble is, everyone is in the penalty box nowadays, leading to more congestion. Can never understand why teams don't leave a player up the pitch when defending corners, meaning the opposition need to bring 2 players back with him.

Well yes, but you can guarantee every club in the league is watching them closely to see how they are doing it, and will try to copy

It’s a pretty basic idea attacking wise - try to take the keeper out the equation and then you’ve a very good chance of getting enough of a head on it to send it goalwards

Agree - what Chelsea did recently was interesting when 2/3 defending players suddenly bombed up field as the Arsenal corner was about to be taken

Arsenal have scored more set pieces because they have scored more goals than anyone else. Interestingly City scored from a corner last night where Haaland blocked off the keeper....no reaction from anyone as Pep is god.

I think this one might be more cyclical.
Arsenal are taking advantage of teams preparing less for corners etc than they would have done.

They'd be pretty dumb not to.

By dumb I mean retarded, not mute.

But they all started playing a bit more like Barcelona did

Some of it’ll definitely filter through

And yeah it’ll be cyclical. Everyone was trying to be Pep, and the game looks Pep influenced throughout the leagues now. Maybe this’ll be then next thing - pace, power, set pieces - until teams work that out and something else comes through

A very good read, thanks Clyde for an excellent summary of the event and Leam's points. I think The gaffer is a very steady Div 1 Manager and if given time will get us promotion! Mentioning time, his point regarding manager's needing to start strongly to allow time to implement longer term goals was really interesting, these days with certain owners (Forest for example) any lack of new manager bounce after ten games means you probably won't see out 20 games as a manager! Hence why the gaffer is probably implementing these more negative tactics which allow us to win games ugly and against the run of play! Getting us to our current position with 10 wins out of 20 really gives the manager banked time to allow him to then adapt for the medium and then longer term goals.
I for one was getting very frustrated with our style of play however, after this read and getting a feel of the difficulties the gaffer is up against i am more than happy to give more time to see how this all plays out.
