STAR Team Predictor Competition

STAR is running something a bit different this year - a prediction competition in aid of the Reading FC Academy. It costs £5 per person to enter, and all you have to do is pick a team from each group each group of 5 or 6 which you think will score the most points over the next season. And anyone can enter, not just STAR members.

Half of all money goes to the Academy to fund special projects which they might not otherwise be able to afford (such as tournaments and travel) and the other 50% of entry money goes in prizes - with the number of entries already received the top prize will be over £200 but we'd like to take it much higher.

We've also had promises that RFC players will enter this, as well as local media people, so this is your chance to compete against all of them - scores will be published each month on the STAR website.

As a bonus for HNA people, I'm happy to accept entries by e-mail, and to accept payments by paypal. PM me for more information if you want to enter by e-mail/paypal. I'll even publish a HNA mini-league if enough nobbers enter.

I have to say I would rather that the money did not go to RFC at all, things the club could not otherwise afford, surely with prices as they are they should be able to find money for all that is needed, though of course that might mean wages kept lower.

How about STAR making funds available for pre match entertainment, such as the penalty kick inflateable, not something that RFC need fund, IMHO

The academy is not particularly well-funded and is under constant financial pressure - the first team get the vast majority of resources - and even more so this season.

What we want to do is what we've done for a couple of seasons, which is to pay for extra activities that the academy budget want to organise for the youngsters, but which isn't in the academy budget - this includes paying for them to go foreign tournaments, etc.

We'd rather invest in the long-term future of the club, rather than pay money for something that is gone by kick-off.

Quick note, there are teams on there in the Football League. Wouldn't it make more sense to close it the day before the start of the FL instead? Which means it would close on the 3rd August?

In some ways yes, but I'd like people to have a chance to enter before the matches at the MadStad on 12th & 19th August, in order to maximise the number of people taking part and to make the prizes and the income for the Academy as big as possible.

I don't see that anyone will gain a massive advantage by those two weeks of League games.

If anyone still wants to enter this competition, we'll be taking entries at the STAR unit outside the East Stand before the matches tomorrow and next week - entries close when we kick off against 'Boro.

The prize fund is already up to virtually £400 and the more who enter the higher the prizes go. Entry is just £5 and 50% of all entry fees go to benefit the Academy.

I'll also take entries by PM (with payment made via Paypal). PM me for exact details and an entry form.

Quite right Aggro, they should create a breakaway club in the Reading Saturday League and burn effigies of John Madejski at half time in protest at his legal purchase of the club.
