As you say, and I totally agree (see my earlier comments about how Beckham changed the profile), the influence may be being blown out of all proportion by the tabloids to sell more papers and to help build up and knock down whoever they're targetting this week, but that's not to say the captains role isn't still an important one.

In regards to Terry's crimes, it pales into significance to what other footballers have done, affairs happen, the people booing, yes even them may have committed an affair sometime.

Terry hasn't committed any crimes (this time, he's past history is very dodgy though). What he has done (which is totally different to anything Gerrard, Rooney, Ferdinand et al have done)is to commit a 'crime' against a team mate. In that respect it doesn ot pale into insignificance at all because the issue directly relates to how England do on the pitch. I think Capello will make the right decision (on the basis that not only is he a pretty switched on guy but he'll have better info than any of us). If he decides that Terry should continue then that will either show Wayne Bridge has been extremely magnanimous or the rest of the squad have all sided with Terry.
Whether fans have had affairs is utterly irrelevant, although if they struggle to grasp the issue as much as you then yes, the booing will be pretty stupid.

Reading TBM's earlier post (including his questioning of the rest of our involvement in football-is 50 years plus in many varied roles anywhere near a qualification? How very dare we have an opposite view?) I think he lives in some kind of Captain Marvel world.
Do you honestly and genuinely believe that the captain is all that you have said?
Great theory to think that he is the spokesperson for the manager and coaches ON the pitch-o.k in amateur football and to some extent in club football but at international level?
Hardly any of our captains have been able to put two words together let alone give instructions to other players-it just isn't like that.

I very much agree that at club level and to some extent at international level the captain can be the link between the players and the manager when airing grievances ether way and getting both sides' views across and therefore an off-the-pitch spokesman has a role to play and indeed some clubs do have a non-playing captain.
John Terry has a special role at Chelsea where he is almost the assistant manager but at very few clubs does this happen and therefore he is a rarity,somebody who does actually have authority on the pitch to make changes whereas people like Ivar or most other captains just don't have that authority.
With England however Terry doesn't have that role and I agree with those that say if we are going to have an England captain (if we really have to have one) the role is as some kind of PR man.
Personally I feel that if we are to have a PR/media man then have a PR/media man and not a footballer.

One further gripe (other than to say that Bridge is not currently a team-mate and may well not be in the future as he has gone backwards in his time at City)and that is "Why the interviews with managers and players/captains after a match?"

I would much sooner see the ref interviewed to find out why certain contentious decisions were given rather than hear the drivel that players and managers come out with just moments after the battle.
The "You know what I mean" ,"Obviously","At the end of the day","Early Doors","The ref spoiled a good game", "My player should never have been sent off" and all the other meaningless twaddle adds nothing to what we have been watching whereas if the ref were interviewed.............................................

I still feel It is a big "if" regarding whether we have a captain ON the pitch.
Nobody has convinced me that it is necessary to have one.
