Very refreshing performance last night and just as refreshing that the manager came out and took responsibilty that if the frony foot approach fails its on him.
England’s performance last night, along with Tuchel’s comments about front-foot football and accepting responsibility for mistakes, has me thinking about leadership styles in football.
Southgate’s England always felt more pragmatic, built around structure, control, and limiting risk. That approach clearly had its strengths in tournament football, even if it sometimes left the team feeling restrained in bigger moments.
Coppell always treated his players like grown ups and didn't tend to overcoach. Also remember after a couple of bad defeats he put the same 11 out to put things right rather than sacpegoating a few.
I really don't like Richardson but I have never met the guy and I keep questioning myself as to why he bothers me so much.
Comparing Richardson to these guys may be a bit unfair, but it seems to me LR will prioritise his own arse before anything else, including the team (front-foot football in his world is just a throwaway soundbite).
I do not believe the players are stupid and must surely see how slopey his shoulders are. That must shape their attitude somewhat and their desire to "run through walls" for him.
Anyway, come on the German!
